FACIAL OILS FOR YOUR SKIN TYPE

Environmental damage, stress and harsh cosmetics strip our skin of natural oils, leaving it dry and damaged or overly oily and problematic. Find out which pure oils can help replace lost moisture.

‘Oils are an anti-ageing miracle,’ says Cape Town-based somatologist Terri-Ann Feris (Somatology is the study or science of the human body). ‘Everybody can benefit from using facial oils, as long as they are plant-based, non-toxic and free of mineral oils.’

SKIN TYPE: OILY/ COMBINATION/PROBLEMATIC

Morning: Clear Skin Cleanser
Ever tried an oil cleanser? Strangely enough, using oil to cleanse oily skin can effectively dissolve excess oil. Mix one teaspoon of castor oil with two teaspoons of olive oil. Massage into skin for one minute. Wet your facecloth with warm water and press gently over your face for a relaxing steam effect. This will also open up the pores and allow excess dirt and grime to lift off while allowing the benefits of the oils to work their magic. Wipe off and repeat if there is still too much oil on your skin (a thin layer of oil is beneficial, and no moisturiser should be necessary after this cleanser). The castor oil will help extract blackheads, whiteheads and prevent excess sebum (natural skin oil) from blocking your pores while the olive oil will nourish and protect your skin.

Evening: Neem
This oil is highly beneficial in healing active acne or breakouts as well as scars and pigmentation. Apply to the spots or all over as a treatment and leave on overnight.

DID YOU KNOW?
Neem is a popular ingredient in soaps, bath powder, shampoos, creams, toothpaste, repellents and even pet-care products.

SKIN TYPE: DRY/MATURE

Morning: Coconut Glow ScrubThis exfoliator is perfect for lifting dead skin. Combine one teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda with one teaspoon of coconut oil and mix until it forms a smooth paste. Gently massage on to cleansed skin and leave on for a few minutes. Rinse off, pat dry and apply your face cream. The micro-fine particles in bicarbonate of soda aid in brightening a dull complexion while lightening age spots. The coconut oil will put back lost moisture and repair your skin’s protective barrier. The result? A baby-soft feel and all-over glow! Use once a week for best results.

Evening: Argan or Rosehip OilArgan is comforting to dry, flaky skin, rejuvenates mature skin and diminishes fine lines and wrinkles. Rosehip is packed with vitamins A and C to help reduce pigmentation and keep skin plump and youthful. Apply to cleansed skin and gently massage in before going to bed.
