Dad is the word

The tradition of celebrating Mothers’ and Fathers’ Days goes back to the early 20th century. A century later, fathers are more in touch with their children – and themselves – than ever before. Vic Foy asked hip-hop musician ProVerb about his experiences of fatherhood and what it means to him to be a father.

The lyrical master and multi-award winner lives a life filled with recording schedules, live performance demands and – more importantly – a well-balanced and all-important family life.

ProVerb says: “Fatherhood has honestly put my life into perspective. If I didn’t before, I certainly have a purpose now and that’s to take care of my kids and provide a safe, happy and healthy environment for them to develop and grow. I have only their best interests at heart and this has changed my entire outlook on life. I no longer have only my needs to consider when making decisions. My time has become a precious commodity and I have to spread it wisely in order to accommodate them, which has made me more focused. They depend on me and I cannot let them down.

“Becoming a dad has actually made me realise just how sentimental I am, how emotional I can be and, if called for, how strict I can be! It has been a learning curve and a reminder of everything my parents instilled in me – all of the life lessons I now pass on to my own kids. Having little ones has also made me grateful for my own childhood, as you realise how much your parents sacrificed and how hard they worked so you could have the best in life.

“My daughter is five and she’s so intelligent it often scares me! She’s very curious and always eager to learn more. My boy recently turned three. He’s more active and energetic and he has quite a voice on him and loves to sing and play instruments.

“The biggest lesson my wife and I try to teach the kids is to share – with each other but also with others. We teach them to take turns and to give others a chance.”
