The tradition of celebrating Mothers’ and Fathers’ Days goes back to the early 20th century. A century later, fathers are more in touch with their children – and themselves – than ever before. Vic Foy asked soap star Jack Devnarain about his experiences of fatherhood and what it means to him to be a father.
As with his many Isidingo fans, Jack is an icon to his children and he’s an even bigger fan of theirs! Between learning his lines and taking to the open road to satisfy his passion for motorcycles, this man is the salt of the earth and is loving the opportunity to grow with his children.
Jack says: “Becoming a dad has made me a more patient man. Thanks to the birth of my kids, I have a new respect for the process. Children start small and grow; there’s something in that! I have faith in that now.
“As an actor I spend my days playing out dreams and now I know that a lot of them are actually possible. I do set high standards for myself and that’s fine for me, but not necessarily for others.
“My son, Neel, is 14 and my daughter, Surina, has recently turned eight. They’re both different sides of me. My son’s the observer – not involved, but thoughtful and introverted, in a good way. My daughter, by comparison, is a complete team player. She’s got a powerful personality. Her artworks adorn our house, but even with both kids showing so much promise, I’m not going to force a profession on either of them.
“With regard to instilling values in my children, saying ‘I love you’ is right up there, along with wanting them both to be genuine individuals. Home is the one place where love, guidance and support come standard. Every dad has a special place for his kids.
“The instinct to do right by your children is built in, so new dads should trust what their hearts tell them. The more open you are to what’s happening around you, the more likely you are to live and learn from the most precious gifts you’ll ever receive.”
