Mark Pilgrim on daddy duty

The tradition of celebrating Mothers’ and Fathers’ Days goes back to the early 20th century. A century later, fathers are more in touch with their children – and themselves – than ever before. Vic Foy asked Radio DJ Mark Pilgrim about his experiences of fatherhood and what it means to him to be a father.

The 94.5 Highveld Stereo and KFM DJ is the proud father of two-year-old Tayla-Jean and a second bundle of joy is about
to steal his heart all over again.

Mark says: “When I became a dad for the first time, I became a much more sensitive person. I even started crying when watching Oprah! On the flip side, I can no longer watch Grey’s Anatomy or Private Practice on TV, as there’s always a young child experiencing some injury or disease and I simply can’t watch it!

“Becoming a dad taught me that it’s not always about me. It makes you look beyond your issues of the day – your child comes first. It’s also shown me unconditional love.

“When Tayla-Jean sees me and runs into my arms to get a big hug, my heart simply melts! She’s our first child and turned two in April. She has a vibrant, strong personality, which also means she wants her own way. She is daddy’s girl, but I’m also a disciplinarian. She can get away with a lot, but some things are non-negotiable – like brushing her teeth! She’s obsessed with my iPad and uses it more than I do. Even though Tayla-Jean is only two-years-old, she understands that mom and dad have jobs to go to, to make money and that we use this money to buy sweets at the shops, so she doesn’t mind when we say we have to leave to go to work!

“As for any tips or guidelines for first-time dads, my best advice is to buy a box of disposable latex gloves. It makes changing a nappy a lot more bearable! Also, if you have WiFi in your home, get an IP (Internet) camera. Besides the Angel audio monitors, it’s the most-used gadget in the house. It’s in our daughter’s bedroom, so we can see if she’s sleeping, or about to bungee jump off her bed!”
