THE TOP MAKEUP TRENDS OF 2018

For some women make-up is an everyday task, others wear it only for certain occasions or that special night out. It can be very daunting figuring out what look fits your style but worry not, you can find the perfect match from our round-up of 2018’s biggest makeup trends!

STRONG LIPS
No doubt this year we saw a whole new spectrum of lipstick colours from the classic reds and burgundies to new hues of sharp pinks and deep dark charcoals. Lip colours reached another level of experimentation and there is a shade for everyone, no matter what your choice of colour is. Whether it’s for every day at the office or going out with your girls, your lip colour makes a statement of what your mood is, and helps complete your overall look.

TV presenter Lalla Hirayama executed this trend superbly, showing off strong and bold lips that contrasted beautifully against her fair complexion.

BOLD EYES
We’ve moved away from the typical smokey eye trend, in favour of more colourful and fun eyeshadow palattes. This trend is perfect right now for summer, with bursts of colours such as bright pinks, orange and even yellow. Easily achievable by applying a thick layer of eyeshadow and accentuated even further with a strong eyeliner and mascara.

Boity Thulo has been consistent in showing off this look in her music videos and moments on the red carpet.

SOFT AND NATURAL
This is the simple go-to trend for anyone who loves the minimalistic and pretty look. With simple, clean foundation paired with soft natural-looking lips in shades of nude and mild beige, this is one trend that will never go away. It is so accessible and has the ‘girl next door’ look! This is also a quick and easy option to get that instant facelift when going on a dinner date or night out or a casual braai with friends.

We’ve seen this trend so many times on Minnie Dlamini, she is naturally beautiful and achieves this look so effortlessly.

DRAMA EFFECT
This year we definitely saw a dramatic and adventurous take on make-up looks! Make-up artists gave us more daring looks, inspiring us to be more adventurous and get out of our comfort zones. This trend is for those who do not mind a little extra time on the make-up chair and needs a bit of skill to accomplish. The drama is created by contoured eyebrows, extended eyes lashes, and the cat-eye eyeliner application method.

It’s perfect for performing artists like Shekinah, as it works well on stage and in front of the camera.

OVER THE TOP / OTT
Taking things to the next make-up level was something that local celeb, Babes Wodumo, was not afraid of taking on this year. Mixing and matching her hair colours with over-the-top shades and her youthful energy. This OTT look is a combination of sleek eyebrows, fiery eyeshadow and thick eyeliner finished off with matching lips.

For those who want to stand out from the crowd and make a statement, this is the direction to take, and definitely not for the faint-hearted.

ON THE CATWALK
The runway is always the hotspot for makeup trends, and at this year’s Africa Fashion Week the vibrant bright colours palette trend was quite evident and so captivating.

2019 TREND ALERT!
2019 is packed with ultra glam in glossy and shimmery shades of metalic and icy colours on eyes and lips. We’ve seen Kim Kardashian share some snippets of this trend on her Instagram page and we’re looking forward to jumping on the bandwagon next year!
