Congolese-born, Cape Town-based blogger, Ghislaine Mutombo of Bisous by Ghislaine has that extra-special flair when it comes to easygoing fashion, beauty and lifestyle. (Bisous translates into English as ‘kisses’.)

DENIM DONE DIFFERENTLY
Denim jeans, skirts, shirts, jackets and dungarees have been around for the longest time and they are still going strong. This season’s new styles put a fresh spin on denim.

Fashion has always been an outlet for me. My style is classic but I love experimenting, taking risks and having fun – and this season’s denim looks offer so much scope for self-expression. My number-one tip on styling denim is always do you! This might sound clichéd, but being yourself is forever on trend.

Bleached wide denims are great with heels and a loose-fitting jacket. Or you can go for long or ankle grazing flared jeans and a crop top or baggy sweater, or a 70s-style midi skirt paired with boots. Mixed-material denim is also big, and colour and print can take it to another level. Other details coming through this season are hem-detail, pin tucks and ribbon – who says denim has to be plain?

Dress with accessories

  • Hats, caps, berets and moon bags are small additions that can easily elevate your look while adding personality to otherwise everyday staple denim items.
  • Lastly, layer, layer, layer! It gives you more room to add your personality to your look. And have fun – it’s fashion, after all. Take risks, be you, be true. Bisous!

CHERNÉ AFRICA
Cherné Africa is a multifaceted micro-influencer based in Johannesburg and represented by The Mighty and The Mercy, who is best known for her personal style and her clever mix of colour, texture and print.

THE PAPER-BAG TREND
The paper-bag silhouette is flattering while the style is comfortable. Being 1.58m tall, it’s my go-to style, as it lengthens my legs with its high-cut waist. The great thing about paper-bag pants is their versatility – they can complement a high-fashion look or add an edge to relaxed streetwear. The focal point of my outfits is always an unconventional heel or boot, which is great for smarter dress codes. However, depending on the occasion you can easily dress your paper-bag pants down with flat sandals or sneakers. I wear mine with cropped tops on hot days or fitted tops that are easy to tuck in, finished off with a blazer or longer-length jacket in transitional weather.

Dos and don’ts

  • DO tuck tees and tops in if they hang below the paper-bag waistband.
  • DO balance proportions by wearing heels or boots with tapered paper-bag pants, and flats with more of a culotte silhouette.
  • DO explore shorts options for hotter weather by applying the same rules
  • as for longer-length pants.
  • DON’T be afraid of printed pants options – make them the statement piece of your entire outfit.

PRINTS PLEASE
After a long winter of wearing only dark shades, I am very excited to inject prints into my spring wardrobe. I have always been a fan of bold prints, especially on breezy sundresses. This season you can expect a new addition to your favourite sundresses; puff sleeves! Yes, this ‘80s trend is back and I can’t wait to wear it.

Because I’m very tall (1.78m), I love wearing maxi dresses. This season I’ll definitely add a leopard-print slip dress to my wardrobe. Believe it or not, leopard-print is one of the most versatile prints! If you’re not into wearing loud prints, you can go for a more toned-down approach by accessorising with a pair of patterned earrings or a print scarf, which you can tie around your ponytail or wear as a headband.

MEN LOVE PRINT TOO
For every new season, I am always excited about trying out a new way of wearing clothes, styling them up and experimenting with different looks. I am a gentleman that likes and enjoys simplicity and attention to detail when it comes to style and putting a look together. I am really excited about trying out more looks with prints and colour. This isn’t a new trend but rather a recurring one. I enjoy prints because they bring so much character and detail to any outfit, keeping in mind not to force it. Prints encourage you to be bold, confident, fluid and add a spark of colour to your personality.

How to rock a print:

  • Make sure that the print material settles well with your skin tone.
  • For a casual look always try and go for one print item, either a printed shirt or pants and keep everything else neutral.
  • Try not to print block by wearing different print colours, this is very risky especially if you are trying the look for the first time. However, you can wear a full print suit with that one print that looks good on you and settles well with your skin tone.
  • Printed material can also be an accessory on your outfit, whether you wear it as a scarf, pocket square or a daring pair of shoes.
