BEAUTY SECRETS BLACK WOMEN WANT TO SHARE

We all love those quick and easy ways of getting that perfect glow, or budget-friendly tricks and tips to help you look youthful and radiant.

In actuality there are a few surprising beauty hacks and secrets that are just under our noses, some are these we already have in our cupboards, others are techniques we would never have considered to have an effect on our skin care and health.

We share a few beauty secrets black women want to share with the world and what’s great to know is that all these tips are cost-effective and use mostly natural products.

USE A WASHCLOTH AS A GENTLE EXFOLIATOR
Washcloths in the shower and bath are as important as the water and soap. Washcloths are a favourite among black women because they scrub away more than just hand-to-body contact, but also they exfoliate the skin and make it smooth because of their semi-abrasive texture. Use separate washcloths for your face and body, and use white washcloths so that you can see all the dirt, makeup and debris that comes off.

THE SMILE TECHNIQUE
The smile and keep it moving technique is a lesson passed down from generations of black women. Older women teach lessons on how it's better to keep smiling and handle matters graciously. No matter what the world throws at you, keep it moving and have a constant smiling and a resting pleasant face, even though you might want to cry or scream. This beauty ritual reduces fine lines and other signs of ageing, while keeping your emotional state in check as well.

GOOD OLD VASELINE
The good old petroleum jelly that you grew up with making your face super shiny and greasy is actually a gem to have as a face and body moisturiser. Vaseline not only gives you baby soft skin but actually is a barrier that locks in moisture. The Vaseline works by creating a sealing barrier between cells in dry or damaged skin, which locks in moisture and speeds up your skin’s natural recovery process. The formula is verified by the Journal of Cosmetic Science as being non-comedogenic, which means it shouldn’t clog your pores. Put on a good layer after you’ve cleansed your body and face.

COVER HAIR IN SATIN BONNET
Most black women sleep in satin bonnets and scarves to maintain hair moisture and to prevent breakage caused by the friction of cotton sheets and pillowcases. When sleeping with uncovered hair you end up rubbing your hair against the pillowcase throughout the night. A cotton pillowcase is very absorbent and drains moisture from your hair leaving your hair extremely dry. In addition, cotton pillowcases have a rough surface that tends to grab your hair, which can lead to broken and damaged hair strands. If you already have weak and damaged hair, sleeping without a satin bonnet will lead to further damage. Cover your hair every night with a satin bonnet and protect your hair and prevent dry hair and breakage.

ALWAYS USE SUNSCREEN
Sun protection is the best way to prevent signs of early ageing, while also building a barrier against harmful UV rays. Even though the saying goes that ‘black doesn’t crack’, your darker skin tone doesn’t let you off the hook when it comes to sun protection. Damaging UV rays can penetrate all skin types. Although dark skin does have built-in SPF because darker people naturally produce more melanin, (the pigment that gives skin its colour) – the more melanin you have the fewer UV rays penetrate your skin. However, black skin also gets sunburnt which can make your skin look older and can lead to sagging. Although most sunscreens are thick, pasty and white when applying on your face, you can get formulas that are more liquid and sheer.

BEAUTY STARTS ON THE INSIDE
They say beauty is only skin deep, and true beauty starts on the inside. Yes, the latest moisturises and serums can help you boost your complexion and minimise fine lines, but the real secret to looking beautiful is to nourish your hair and skin from within. Everything you were told about eating well is true, healthy-looking skin and hair requires key nutrients for its formation. As we get older the body becomes less efficient in absorbing some of these nutrients and certain vitamins and minerals become depleted. Cell regeneration slows down as we age, so our complexions appear dull and fine lines and wrinkles begin to appear. Eating a healthy balanced diet that includes protein-rich foods, healthy fats, and plenty of fruits and vegetables will help ensure your body receives all the nutrients to support you as you age. After all if you’re feeling great on the inside, you’ll naturally feel young and more radiant on the outside.

OTHER TIPS BLACK WOMEN USE:
· A jar of coconut oil will save your in skin and hair emergencies. Use as a hair detangler, face cleanser or mix with baking soda for a quick exfoliator.
· Braiding and twisting your natural hair instead of using curling iron avoids heat damage, twist your hair for a few hours or overnight and it will have the same effect of hot curled hair.
· Drink a cup of tea with antioxidants before bed to allow your body to detox while you’re sleeping.
