From Jacques LaGrange to Zed Menswear, we show you the top looks of the very first New York Runway South Africa show.
Friday 10th October was a big moment for fashion in South Africa. New York Fashion Week’s finest were showcased at the Cape Town Marriott Hotel Crystal Towers. A fashion first in Mzansi, New York Runway South Africa is put together to merge the rich African fashion cultures of South Africa with the fashion-forward trends from New York Fashion Week.
Dressed to the nines, celebrities, models and media personalities flocked to the red carpet on Friday night, with cameras flicking and the room abuzz with excitement.
The show was a spectacular exhibition of what’s trending globally and what we can expect to be wearing very soon.

Next on the runway was Van Else Hardjopawiro of VanElse. Her collection moved the crowd because of its African prints and patterns mixed with sophisticated modern pieces. It’s evident in her work that she designs for every African woman and her pieces were well tailored, accentuating all the right places with a deep Afro-centric approach.
Another big name that strutted the catwalk was Henry Picado of ESTE & CHLO who has designed for Lady Gaga. His show was romantic and graceful, his gowns are contemporary handcrafted bespoke pieces inspired by the glamour of Hollywood. ESTE & CHLO said on the red carpet, “Fashion is an art and we must find our own masterpiece.”

Local men’s apparel designers, Zed Menswear, also made an appearance on the runway, with models in pristine suits with clean lines and shoes to match. They’ve opened a store right at the reception area of the Cape Town Marriot Hotel Crystal Towers, which made it easier for the guests to view their garments at close range.
