WE CATCH UP WITH ZIZO TSHWETE

TV and radio personality Zizo Tshwete is a darling of SA’s entertainment scene, as well as the mother of three-year-old Vukile. We speak to her about motherhood and her New Year’s resolutions.

SOME PEOPLE USE THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR TO REFLECT AND REASSESS. HOW DO YOU START YOUR YEAR?
In the beginning of the year, I am already working on the things I want to get done in the year. I reflect at the end of the year on what worked or didn’t, and what I’d like to do better. I use timelines as guidelines because sometimes being stuck on achieving something by a specific time doesn’t allow you to enjoy spontaneity for life to surprise you.

ANY NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS?
I always separate them according to professional and personal goals, then break them down even further. Sometimes when you don’t see yourself as having achieved the ‘big ticket’ items, you think you have failed. However, I find achieving smaller goals makes me feel I’ve made progress.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS YEAR?
This is the year I operate in full confidence, knowing exactly who I am. I have done a tremendous amount of growing in the past year. The things that excite me are about serving others, and I will be expanding my opportunities in that regard.

PLEASE TELL US ABOUT VUKILE?
Our boy is incredible! He loves to learn, and his energy is so contagious. He is so affectionate, kind and smart.

WHAT VALUES ARE YOU TEACHING HIM?
It’s important to us that he knows and loves his language, culture and heritage. We teach him to be respectful and kind, and to be open to learning new things about people and their different backgrounds.

HE IS IN PRESCHOOL – HOW HAS HE TAKEN TO THAT?
He goes through a lot of shoes! I have no idea how much fun they have at school, but he wears through them so quickly. We are fortunate that he is always excited to be back at school.

PLEASE SHARE YOUR MOTHERHOOD JOURNEY THUS FAR?
It is the best and the toughest job in the world! You have to be open to unlearning so much. Also, it’s important to understand that your child is an individual who sees the world in their own way. You have to be consistent in the teachings that you think are important. This journey is the one I am the most grateful for. It’s an incredible responsibility to take care of a little human being.

WHAT’S YOUR MOST IMPORTANT LESSON THUS FAR?
I have had to wake up every day intentional about wanting to be a better human being in every sense of the word. I don’t want to pass on fears or irrational thinking to him. I’ve also learnt to be patient as he learns about and experiences the world, and also be open to him teaching me! He teaches me to laugh so much more and to marvel at the little miracles around us.

WHAT’S IN THE PIPELINE?
One particular project should be ready to launch within the year. I’ve been pouring my heart into it. Not much to share right now though, other than that it will be in line with the things that are important in life gratitude, servitude and growth.
