5 MAKE-UP TIPS FOR MATURE SKIN

Five make-up tips to enhance your look as you mature.

As you get older, your skin undergoes many changes; from texture shifts and pigmentation issues to more pronounced wrinkles and loss of luminosity. ‘Older women must embrace make-up and have fun with it,’ says make-up artist Renee de Wit. ‘Instead of trying to hide flaws, enhance what you’ve got.’ We reveal the simplest ways to help you look your best no matter your age.
1. A FIRM FOUNDATION
Before looking at coverage, consider looking after your skin first. No matter your age, following a dedicated skincare routine involving a cleanser, exfoliator, serum, moisturiser, and SPF is essential for mature skin. As your skin ages, not only does it start to lack moisture and radiance, but fine lines, wrinkles, crow’s feet, and sunspots become more prominent as the skin’s ability to renew itself slows down.

Before applying your foundation, consider first using a hydrating primer, like JBG Pore Minimising Primer. This is particularly beneficial for mature skin types since it can keep make-up products from settling into fine lines and wrinkles, creating a smooth, polished and plumped canvas for your foundation.

When choosing your foundation, Renee recommends formulas that have hydrating properties. ‘As skin loses luminosity with age, it’s best to use a foundation that fuses skincare and coverage so that you have a radiant complexion. You could even mix some of your daily serum or moisturiser with your foundation to give your skin a natural, glowing finish.’

To even out your skin tone and ensure your coverage looks more natural, use a moist sponge or foundation brush to apply your hydrating formula.

2. CONCEAL AND REVEAL
Whether it’s puffiness, dark circles, age spots, or crow’s feet, the under-eye area is often one of the first parts of the face to show signs of ageing. As this delicate skin becomes thinner overtime, you’ll want to look for concealer formulas with creamy textures that are hydrating, light and fluid.

Renee suggests strategically applying your concealer so that it almost ‘lifts’ your face. ‘Concentrate on the outer corners of your eye and add some above your eyebrow to create an almost 3D effect that boosts the area in an upward direction,’ she explains.

BEAUTY TIP: When it comes to make-up formulas in general, stick to cream-based products, says Renee. ‘Powders tend to settle in the lines and accentuate them instead of blurring them,’ she says.

BEAUTY TIP: Introduce a highlighting balm, another great product that can bring a more youthful touch to your overall look. ‘Applying your balm to the highest point of the face such as the bridge of your nose, brow bone, cheekbones and cupid’s bow will highlight these areas.’

3. BLUSH CRUSH
As you age, your skin begins to lose its natural glow. That’s why make-up products like highlighters and blush can be skin-savers as they instantly bring warmth and radiance back into your complexion. Opt for creamy formulas that give the skin a more natural, fresh, and healthy luminosity.

Smiling while you apply blush has long been cited as a universal, tried-and-true technique, but it’s not as effective as you age, says Reene. ‘It’s best to apply blush along your cheekbones and blend upwards,’ she adds. This will define and instantly lift your features.

4. FOR YOUR EYES ONLY
‘You want to open the eyes and make them look as big as possible because it makes you look more youthful,’ says Renee. So the first step is to curl lashes with an eyelash curler, starting right at the root. Next, pick a mascara that has both nourishing and lash-lifting properties. With age, your brows will begin to lighten and perhaps even thin out. Use brow-defining products like the JBG Brow Gel to instantly make brows appear fuller and open up the eyes to give a more youthful look. This will also help frame the face.

5. POUT WITH POWER
Lip definition often softens with age, which means your lipstick is more likely to bleed into the skin around the lips. Luckily, there’s an easy fix: dab a small amount of concealer around your lips and use a lip liner pencil to define them. This simple trick will add fullness to your mouth while preventing your colour from feathering and bleeding. You can also draw the lips slightly larger than your natural shape to make them appear plumper and younger.

BEAUTY TIP: When it comes to lipstick formulas, the JBG Moisturising lipsticks are a perfect fit as they provide your lips with high pigmentation and long-lasting moisture.
