13 THINGS YOU NEVER KNEW YOU COULD DO WITH SALT

It makes food taste better but it’s handy in other ways as well. Here are a few ways salt can help you in the kitchen and around the home.

A cheap little bag of coarse salt is a handy thing to have in the kitchen. You can use it for cooking, of course, but also to solve a lot of pesky household problems.

Coarse salt just means not ground finely, so with big crystals. For the tips below, fine salt makes sense when you’ll dissolve it and crystal will work better for soaking up liquids or scrubbing.

KEEP SLICES FRESH
Stir half a teaspoon of salt into a cup of water. Soak apple slices in the water for ten minutes and drain. When you want to use them, rinse under the tap. They won’t be brown and they’ll taste fresh. This works for sliced potatoes as well.

KEEP DRINKS COOL
Add salt to an ice bucket to chill drinks faster. Put your wine bottle in an bucket or container. Pack a layer of ice around it and sprinkle with salt. Keep layering up to the bottle neck, then add water up to the to level of the ice. After 10 to 12 minutes, the wine will be chilly.

CLEAN CUTTING BOARDS
Sprinkle them with coarse salt, rub lightly with a damp cloth and rinse in soapy water. Always dry wooden boards right away. Most are made of layered wood that could pull apart if the board stays wet for long.

UNSTINK YOUR HANDS
Get the garlic or onion smell off your hands. Rub them with a mixture of lemon juice and salt, then wash with soap.

CLEAN UP AN EGG MESS
If a raw egg breaks on the floor or counter, sprinkle salt on it and leave for 20 minutes. It will be easy to wipe after that.

STOP THE STAIN
If you mess a liquid such as juice or tomato sauce on a table cloth or clothes, rub fine salt into it. That will suck up the liquid before it stains. Wash the material as soon as you can. Rub salt on armpit stains on white shirts, leave for an hour and wash. Lift food stains and smells from the fridge by scrubbing shelves with half a cup of salt mixed with two litres of warm water.

KEEP COLOURS BRIGHT
Half a cup of salt with your regular machine wash will prevent colour seeping out of bright clothes. It works very well with new clothes that haven’t been washed before.

DO THE DRAIN
Once a week, pour half a cup of fine salt in your kitchen or bathroom drains. Then wash it down with about a litre of hot water. This way, they won’t get blocked easily.

TREAT YOUR THROAT
Dissolve a pinch of fine salt in a small glass of water and gargle with it. Don’t swallow the water. It will take the pain away quickly.

SHINE SOME GLASS
Make dull glass sparkle by making a paste with a third of a cup of coarse salt and two tablespoons of vinegar. Rub it on the inside of the glass, leave for 20 minutes, scrub, rinse and dry. Rubbing a lipstick mark on a glass with salt before washing will take it off.

CLEAN CUPS
Get rid of coffee and tea stains in mugs and cups by rubbing fine salt on them. Speaking of coffee – a pinch of salt will make black coffee with no sugar taste less bitter.

SAVE THE SPONGE
Soak a slimy dish sponge in two cups of water with a quarter cup of salt. Leave overnight and it should be clean by morning.

CHERISH THE CHEESE
Stir two tablespoons of salt into three cups of water. Dip a paper towel in the water and wrap loosely around cheese before you put it in the fridge. This will help slow the growth of mould.

This is as many tips as we could squeeze in, but there are many more. Do you have any salty tricks? Please share!
