SECURITY TIPS TO SAFEGUARD YOUR NEW HOME

Make sure your new home is safe and secure by implementing these simple, affordable and highly effective security measures.

One of the most important considerations when settling into a new home and area is safety and security. To ensure you are as safe as possible in your new space, here are easy-to-implement security tips to keep you and your loved ones sleeping peacefully in your new home.

1. CHECK YOUR PROPERTY INSIDE AND OUTSIDE
When inspecting your new home’s security, do a perimeter check on the inside and outside of the property. First, check to see if the property is vulnerable. Then, stand outside and picture yourself getting in if you were to be locked out. Keep an eye out for overhanging branches, for instance, that thieves could use to hoist themselves over your fence. Have these cut as soon as possible.
2. CHECK ENTRY AND EXIT POINTS
We all know to check light switches and water pressure when viewing a home but checking window latches, door locks and gates is equally essential to ensure your new property is safe and secure. The last thing you want is to find a broken gate on your first night and worry about somebody getting in or the family pet getting out. So make sure that all sliding doors and windows have strong burglar bars or security gates and that they fit in their frames correctly.

Security Tip: Arrange to have locks changed or fixed before you move in.

3. CALL IN THE PROFESSIONALS
If your new home doesn’t have an alarm or security system, and you can afford to have one installed, arrange an installation with a reputable security company. If your home does come with these security features already in place, be sure to organise a new alarm code and service agreement with the security company before moving in. Also, you might want to put safety chains on solid doors and add anti-lift locks to sliding doors.

4. LIGHT IT UP
Make sure you have sufficient outdoor lighting. You want enough light in the evenings to see what is going on in the garden or when you’re walking from the entrance gate to the front door, for instance. If not, be sure to have additional lights installed.

Security Tip: Motion-sensor lights that go on when there’s movement are great for dark garden corners.

5. UPDATE YOUR PHONEBOOK
Be sure to update your phonebook with emergency contact numbers for hospitals, police, the security company, and neighbourhood watch in your new area.

Security Tip: Save the location of your nearest hospital and doctor in Google Maps so that you can easily pull it up in an emergency.

6. SAY HI TO YOUR NEIGHBOURS
When it comes to moving into a new neighbourhood, knowing your neighbours can boost your safety. Make sure to introduce yourself to your new neighbours as soon as possible. They are a great source of information on what’s happening in the neighbourhood, referrals for security companies, etc.

Security Tip: Joining a street or neighbourhood safety group on WhatsApp will allow you to quickly share info regarding a stranger lurking in the streets, for instance, and keep everyone informed about what’s going on in the area.
