5 TRAVELLING TIPS FOR SOLO ADVENTURERS

There’s nothing like your first or (seventh) solo trip to a far-off destination. Although exciting, solo adventures come with their own challenges. It is crucial to research and prepare thoroughly before setting off on your trip.

“Solo travelling as a woman means having to leave your comfort zone, which can be both thrilling and intimidating at the same time – especially for first-time female travellers. Doing enough research builds confidence in your decisions, and helps you trust your instincts even more while embracing the opportunities that come with exploring the world,” says Sadudee Sangnil, Director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand in London.

Here are five great tips to help you when you are considering a solo trip

1. DO YOUR RESEARCH
Before embarking on your trip, learn as much as you can about your destination. That includes creating an itinerary with the best places to visit as a solo traveller, important contact information, addresses and emergency numbers to ensure you are well prepared.

2. LEARN ABOUT LOCAL TRANSPORTATION
It’s critical to know how to get around when you are travelling. For your safety, learn how local public transportation works. Some countries are set up for solo travel, but that’s not always the case – understand how it works in the area you’ll be visiting to move around easily.

3. UNDERSTAND THE LOCAL CULTURE
Avoid run-ins with the law and the risk of offending locals by learning about the culture of the country you are visiting. If you visit a religious country with holy sites, know what to wear and how to carry yourself at these sites. The last thing you want is to get into trouble in a foreign country.

4. JOIN GROUP ACTIVITIES AND EXCURSIONS
Being part of organised group tours and activities is a great (and safe) way to meet like-minded solo travellers. Whether it’s snorkelling, visiting religious sites or exploring ancient ruins, shared experiences can create deep connections.

5. RELAX AND UNWIND
Remember why you chose to travel in the first place and disconnect from the stresses of everyday life. Unwind and appreciate the different experiences – culture, unique cuisine, lifestyle and the people you’ll meet on your adventure.
