Suspect you may be sensitive to certain food groups but not quite sure? This article will assist you in identifying hidden food sensitivities you may not have been aware of and offer tips on how to address them.
As fun and delicious as food can be, it can also be the reason behind some of our discomfort. Many of us have food sensitivities without even realising it! Intolerances to food can be shown in diverse ways, not just a full-blown allergy attack. We explore some common food sensitivities’ symptoms and how you can address them, so you can enjoy your next meal with no hassles. If you suspect any of these, mention it to your doctor before simply cutting out a food group.
WHEAT
Wheat is a big part of many diets, used in our breads, cereals, and pastas, the foundation of many of our meals. Symptoms of a wheat sensitivity can be revealed through bloating, gas, diarrhoea, or stomach cramps after consumption. However, it can also rear its head as a skin rash, hives and runny nose. Wheat sensitivities are more common than you may think. Consider switching to gluten-free alternatives such as rice, quinoa, or oats instead.
SOYBEANS
Digestive problems, skin rashes, headaches, and even mood swings can be a sign of a soybean sensitivity. Soybean can be found in soya milk, breads, crackers, cereals, some nut butters, and even canned tuna! Opt for soy-free alternatives like almond or coconut milk. Your best bet would be reading food labels carefully just to be extra sure.
CAFFEINE
We all love a good cup of coffee or freshly brewed black tea! However, too much of a good thing result in jitteriness, anxiety, heart palpitations, or digestive disturbances. Caffeine is another common sensitivity, with many people dismissing their symptoms as them coming off a caffeine high, needing another cup. Slow your roll! Too much caffeine can mean insomnia and disruption of your liver’s ability to metabolise it in the future. Limit your caffeine intake by switching to decaffeinated beverages or herbal teas such as rooibos or chamomile.
EGGS
An egg sensitivity can be the cause of digestive trouble, skin problems, nasal congestion or asthma. This happens when the body’s immune system becomes sensitive to the protein within the yolks or egg whites. Instead of eggs, one can make use of ground flaxseed, aquafaba or silken tofu!
SULPHITES
Sulphites are commonly found in beer, wine and cider. Their duty is to preserve and enhance these beverages, with the cost often being symptoms such as headaches, rashes, or difficulty breathing. You do not have to miss the party! Look for wines labelled as "sulphite-free" or "low sulphite", with alternative option being beverages like vodka or gin.
