She’s got game! ‘Rugby’s First Lady’ is regarded as one of South Africa’s fi nest (and fiercest) sports broadcasters.
After building a career in local radio, Motshidisi Mohono stepped in front of the SuperSport cameras and has risen to become a senior rugby anchor. Her impact on sports journalism and representation cannot be overstated; she’s been a trailblazer, paving the way for other women to pursue careers in the world of sports broadcasting.
WHERE DOES YOUR PASSION FOR SPORTS COME FROM?
I played netball throughout school and hockey in high school. My dad was my biggest fan. He was a super-dad, always there for me and my siblings. He was there when we were all born. He took us to school every day and would even wake up early to make our school lunches. He also loved sports and would watch soccer matches with us when we were kids.
HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THIS ‘MAN’S WORLD’ OF SPORT?
Women are often thought to be just a pretty face. People question your credibility because sport has always been a man’s world. But if you just do your job to the best of your ability, and keep the main thing as your main focus, then your credibility will shine through and be undeniable. Sports presenting should be informative, entertaining and educational, and that’s what I do.
WHAT MAKES YOUR APPROACH TO SPORTS BROADCASTING UNIQUE?
It is important to stay true to yourself. Some women come into the business and want to be one of the boys and fit in, but I think you should stand out. Being the anomaly is our [women’s] real X-factor. We shouldn’t lose who we are to be accepted in that sort of space. Just be yourself.
@motshidisim Still coming down from the high that was the 2023 Rugby World Cup Final. To be pitchside at a World Cup is a dream come true. To watch your team - the Springboks - win the trophy against the old foe? Incredible!! Congratulations to Jacques, Rassie, Siya and the entire team. This win is thoroughly deserved and has marked this group as one of the greatest of all time! Thank you to my colleagues and leader at @SuperSportTV; it’s always an honour working with you legends. We put on a brilliant show! I can’t wait to see what else Modimo has in store for me. What a life! To God be the Glory 🙏🏾✨ #RWC2023 #SportsAnchor #Springboks #DreamsReallyDoComeTrue #Rugby #LoveRugby ♬ Yes God - Mörda, Thakzin, Mhaw Keys Remix - Oscar Mbo & KG Smallz & Mörda & Thakzin & Mhaw Keys
WHO ARE YOUR FAVOURITE SPORTS PERSONALITIES?
It’s hard to choose! I’d have to say the Springboks and their captain, Siya Kolisi; South African netball player Bongiwe Msomi; tennis star Serena Williams; the legendary Lionel Messi... These are just a few of my favourites that come to mind right now!
DO YOU HAVE A MESSAGE FOR OUR READERS?
I am always trying to be better. Always trying to improve and step up. So my message, to young people and women especially, is to pursue your passion and never let anyone tell you that you can’t achieve your dreams. I also think it’s crucial to remember where you come from. Thinking back to where you’ve been, and what you have had to overcome, will often give you the strength to keep moving forward despite your fears.
