HOW TO INCORPORATE UTILITY PIECES INTO YOUR WARDROBE

Utility Form and function stylishly collide this season!

Trends change with the wind in the fashion world, but utility emerges just about every year as a versatile and cool look that seamlessly combines functionality with style. From multi-pocketed cargo pants to rugged boots, it’s not just about practicality; it’s about making a bold statement. Here’s how to effortlessly incorporate utility pieces into your wardrobe from day to night.

1. THE FOUNDATION

Cargo Pants (or Skirts)
Cargo pants are the cornerstone of the utility trend. For a polished work look, pair them with a tailored, feminine blouse or crisp button-down shirt. Tuck in your top to define your waist and add a sleek belt to elevate the ensemble. Complete the look with a pair of ankle boots or loafers for a sophisticated touch. To transition seamlessly into a night out, swap the blouse for a stylish fitted sweater or trendy crop top. Opt for heeled boots and statement earrings to infuse a touch of glamour.

2. TOP LAYERS

Utility Jackets & Waistcoats
Utility jackets mean business, and the classic is a denim jacket. For a work setting, layer the jacket over a classic blouse and tailored trousers. Cinch the waist with a belt to maintain a feminine silhouette. When heading out for the evening, pair the jacket with a sleek dress or jumpsuit. When it comes to the utility waistcoat, it can be worn over a fitted turtleneck and wide-leg pants for a fashion-forward office ensemble. Add a smarter tailored jacket or blazer if you like. Then swap the pants for skinny jeans and add ankle boots and a sparkly bag for the transition into night-time allure.

3. FOOTWEAR

Rugged Boots
A staple of utility fashion. Pair them with cargo pants and a cosy sweater for a casual daytime look. When heading out at night, tuck your skinny jeans into the boots and add a leather jacket for an urban aesthetic. Or show the boots off, along with your legs, by opting for a short skirt (and tights, if you like).

4. ACCESSORIES

Utility Accents
Go for statement belts to cinch your waist and add a touch of polish. Experiment with oversized, 4 multi-pocketed bags or smaller ones in camo print or denim or quilting. Chunky bracelets and watches match the rugged aesthetic, while aviator sunglasses and caps add an extra layer of cool. The utility trend is super-practical (all those pockets!) and more comfortable, giving you freedom of movement, plus its masculine origins project ‘strong woman’. The colour palette tends to khakis, browns, greys and black, but utility can come in any colour. Similarly, the fabrics tend to be practical and hard-wearing, but do look out for a twist of quilted satin or sleek suede. It’s all about balancing masculine and feminine, hard and soft.
