LAYER SLAYER

Staying warm and comfortable doesn't mean compromising on style. Use these tips for layering shirts, jerseys and coats with flair

South Africa's climate allows for a more flexible (and fun) approach to winter dressing. Some days, and regions, require full-length parkas with umbrellas to match, while others - blessed with sunshine - only need a light cover-up for a bit of warmth. Rather than completely overhauling our wardrobes for every new season, we can seamlessly transition pieces from late summer and autumn and layer them up with new outerwear items such as jerseys, jackets and coats. This allows for creative mixing and matching to step out in stylish (and functional) winter outfits.

So as you layer up this week, remember the three colour rule. Keep the layers to a maximum of 3 colours. Different shades of the same colour count as one. THE THREE-LAYER FORMULA
Most fashion pros use the three-layer rule. The first (closest to your skin) keeps you dry; the second keeps you insulated and warm; and the third layer provides protection against the elements such as wind or rain. Consider the following points when picking your three.

1ST LAYER: SHIRT
Different textures provide added visual interest. Think of pairing a smooth cot shirt with a chunky-knit sweater or a flannel shirt with a denim jacket. Shirts of varying lengths add dimension and visual intrigue – allow a longer shirt to peek out from underneath shorter layers. Collar details also add to the overall aesthetic – leaving them unbuttoned or popping them over the neckline of a sweater or jacket adds a modern, relaxed vibe, while drawing attention to the layered elements.

2ND LAYER: JERSEY
Jerseys offer endless possibilities for layering and creative styling. Start with the basics: a plain T-shirt, tank top or fitted shirt. Next, experiment with contrasting textures to add visual interest. Pair a chunky-knit jersey with smooth fabrics like cotton or silk, for example. For effortless chic that doesn’t skimp on comfort, go for oversized jerseys – layer them over fitted tops for balance, or opt for a fully layered oversized combo for maximum style. To add definition, belt your jersey at the waist.

3RD LAYER: COAT
Yes, they provide warmth, but the variety of lengths, fits, fabrics and styles also adds at extra layer of interest and lish to any outfit. Whether a classic trench, a cosy wool a coat or trendy parka, the right coat ties up the layered look. Consider the length and silhouette – longer coats add drama and elegance, shorter ones have a more casual, snappy, modern vibe. Pay attention to proportions: for fashion-forward look, pair an oversized coat with sleek, form-fitting layers underneath.

THEN ADD ACCESSORIES
The easiest way to upgrade your winter look – and add to the layering aesthetic – is using scarves, hats, gloves and statement jewellery. These finishing touches add polish and personality to your outfit while tying everything together. Play around with mixing and matching different textures, fabrics, colours and prints.
