From cluttered countertops to too many colours in one space, here are three mistakes you may be making with your kitchen decor.

Mistake #1: Over-cluttered kitchen counters

A cluttered kitchen counter will leave your kitchen feeling disorganised and full – and will make your kitchen seem smaller. “Anything with a plug should be out of sight unless you’re using it,” explains interior designer Kate Dawson.

Mistake #2: Following social media trends that don’t suit your kitchen

We’re all guilty of this one – scrolling through Instagram and TikTok and seeing something that sparks inspiration for your own kitchen. The problem is that not all these trends suit our kitchen – and it can be expensive to keep changing it up all the time. “Following trends can lead us to make impulsive decisions that are less enduring, which ultimately leads us to spend more money over time as we continue to swap things out, which is not a sustainable way of living,” says Carrie Moore co-founder of Carrie Moore Interior Design.

If you still can’t resist a decor trend, make small changes like getting colourful and on-trend dishtowels or frequently switch out items on open shelving like vases, candles and potplants.

Mistake #3: Too many colours

Too many colours can cause chaos in the kitchen. Rather opt for neutral colours. Want a pop of colour? Make a statement by choosing a bold colour for a backsplash.

“I like a kitchen in a soft, singular color palette. Since the kitchen usually sees the most activity in a home, it will also likely see the most clutter. Think about kids’ homework on the kitchen table or island, art projects hung on the refrigerator, calendars, mail, magazines, purses and backpacks hanging on backs of chairs. A kitchen with a soft color palette will absorb these items better and won’t look so confusing and messy,” explains interior designer Tara Felice Engelberg from Tara Felice Interiors.
