3 tips to keep your home clutter-free

1. Find a space for everything
Having a designated area for everything in your house is a fool-proof way to ensure your space is clutter-free. And yes, even your daily newspaper needs a spot – or else it will pile up and quickly create an untidy mess. “A great habit is to designate specific areas for different activities or items in your mind (e.g. work, hobbies, relaxation) and keep them separate. This helps prevent the spread of clutter in between rooms and throughout the house,” says Stefan Bucur, founder of Rhythm of the Home.

2. Apply the one-in-one-out rule
Items like clothes, books and common kitchen items can easily accumulate in your home if you don’t keep an eye on it. The ‘one-in-one-out’ rule is as easy as it sounds! “Before bringing any new item into your home, identify something similar to remove,” says Cara Palmer, a home organisation expert. Did you buy a new water bottle? Think twice about keeping your old one (or five old ones in the kitchen cupboard).
3. Use containers you already own
It can be tempting to go and buy storage containers if you’re in your home-decluttering era. But, steer clear of unnecessary spending when you are looking for containers to organise your items. Instead, scavenge around the house first to see what you have to work with. “Before purchasing new organising supplies, look for bins, baskets, or containers you already own,” says founder of Luxury Pro Organiser Carol Applebaum. Now you can finally breathe a second life into those containers that have been in hiding in your forgotten kitchen drawers for years.
