Follow these 4 tips to become a morning-workout person

There are numerous benefits to working out first thing in the morning: it’s the perfect way to start your day on the right note, results in better sleep and allows for a more consistent routine. Here are 4 tips to becoming a morning-workout person:

1

Plan the day before

The key to a consistent workout? Planning! Get psyched for your morning workout by planning the type of exercise you’ll be doing and for how long, and your warm down. If you’re a runner: what’s your route looking like, or will you be on the treadmill? Will you be focusing on building muscle, or getting in a good stretch with some Pilates? Planning your routine will help take away all the early morning mental gymnastics and allow you to focus more on the actual workout.

2

A little goes a long way

Don’t jump straight into an intensive workout in the morning if you know you’ve got a long day ahead and might struggle to keep your eyes open. It’s important to manage how much time you have in the mornings before getting fully into your day. You don’t want to be rushing between your workouts and other tasks, nor should you limit your amount of rest. The key is to be energised and not anxious. Take things slow by focusing on one form of exercise instead of the whole kitchen sink. This might be in the form of taking a walk or simply doing a few crunches and lunges.

3

The earlier the better

You don’t need to be bright eyed at 3 a.m. – your workout can be done between 7–9 a.m., giving you better quality sleep at night. It also allows you to beat the morning heat because of the lowlight. Working out on an empty stomach can also allow you to burn more fat, which is ideal for those wanting to cut down a few inches. Set your alarms for a little sooner for better results…

4

Take in the morning scenes

Doing your workout outside is a terrific way to take in some scenery. Getting in a morning run to your favourite coffee shop, doing yoga in your garden, or going for a dip in the ocean are great ways to take in the beauty of nature while reaching your fitness goals. They’ll serve as little outings that can get you excited about your workout and keep you motivated. There are plenty of running clubs that start early, which might help keep you accountable and help you see new sights. You might even be able to catch the sunrise!
