Little efforts make huge impacts. Here’s how to ready your home for spring without carving too much of a dent in your pocket.

Sprucing up your home in time for spring doesn’t have to be a costly affair. With a few small tweaks, you can create a whole new look and feel.

1

SWAP OUT YOUR CUSHION COVERS AND THROWS

There’s a reason why scatter cushions are a popular starting place for many interior decorators. Instead of replacing your couches and occasional chairs, think about what to do with what you already have. Scatters and throws are a great opportunity to introduce pops of lighter spring colours, like yellows, greens, pinks and blues, and are easier to swap out and a cost-effective way to redecorate.

2

USE MIRRORS TO BRING IN THE LIGHT

If your spaces are feeling dark and small, swap out your dark, heavy curtains and drapes for lighter ones so that natural light floods your rooms. Another way to make a room feel lighter (and bigger) is to position a mirror opposite a light source or window so that it reflects light, which in turn will make the space feelairier and brighter – perfect for spring!

3

CREATE DISPLAYS AROUND THE HOUSE

You can do this by combining decorative objects in creative ways. Simple visual arrangements create an eye-catching pop of interest while also showcasing your favourite treasures, ornaments and trinkets. First choose the location – a chest of draws, coffee table or bookcase are good starting points. Next decide on a unique visual anchor, like a pile of books, candle, diffuser, small vase, picture frame, or flowers and greenery. Objects grouped in three or five tend to be more visually pleasing than pairs, but experiment and see what you like best.

4

PAINT AN ACCENT WALL

Accent walls have been trending for decades, and for good reason. By using a different colour, pattern or texture on one wall, you bring in contrast and depth to the space, adding drama and drawing the eye. If you decide you want to change it up with a different look or style, changing the accent wall is relatively simple and less time-consuming than changing the entire room.

5

ADD FLOWERS AND INDOOR PLANTS

Want your home to feel like spring? Add more flowers and plants! Houseplants not only make a space feel more lived in, they also contribute to increased oxygen in your home. If you’re unsure where to begin and don’t have much of a green thumb, start with a tough and easy-to-grow plant like a pothos vine or heart-leaf philodendron, and expand from there as you grow more comfortable with other indoor plants. Delicious monsters and fiddle-leaf figs are great options for filling empty room corners because of their large size and unique-looking leaves.
