Transform your living room into a haven of comfort and warmth this winter with our inexpensive tips.

1. Layer up on textures

Contrasting textures – particularly plush textures like velvet, faux fur and leather – will add luxury to your room. Consider a selection of scatter cushions in varying textures and sizes, a soft throw for the couch and items made from natural materials such as wood, stone and shell.

2. Choose a warm colour palette

A calming, soothing colour palette is a balm for the senses. If you’re looking to create a welcoming, cocooning environment, steer clear of bold prints, cool colours like purple or blue, or stark contrasts. Instead, opt for natural shades, anywhere from light and airy creams and whites to sable, rust and clay, all the way through to earthy olive greens.

3. Add a soft rug

A soft rug is absolutely essential if you have a tiled floor, which can make the room feel cold and uninviting. Even wood and screed floors, although they appear more earthy and natural, can benefit from a quality rug. Choose one that is about 2040cm longer than your couch and make sure it’s big enough to fit under the edges of your couch and armchairs.

Before, this living was cold and didn’t really suit my client’s style, so with a few small changes we brought this space to life, on a budget, of course 😁 We added a rug, changed the cushions, replaced the light fitting, tidied up the printing corner and added a stunning mirror. We’re not completely done yet, we’re doing some wood panelling in the corner to complete the space and fill the empty wall 😁 Mirror & printer table from @builderssa Rug from @superbalist Coffee table from @storeandmoresa Cushions from @mrp_home #theoriginalhome #fy #fyp ♬ Call Me Maybe x Whitney Houston by DARCY STOKES - darcy stokes

Instead, scavenge around the house first to see what you have to work with. “Before purchasing new organising supplies, look for bins, baskets, or containers you already own,” says founder of Luxury Pro Organiser Carol Applebaum. Now you can finally breathe a second life into those containers that have been in hiding in your forgotten kitchen drawers for years.

5. Add charm

The finishing touch to your living room make-over is to add decor items that you love (and fit with the colour palette), such as a vase, coffee table tray, ornaments, wall art and framed photographs. Also consider vintage touches like old books, a chest, baskets or glassware.
