5 easy ways to cut back costs even on a tight budget

Times are tough but it’s possible to manage a tight budget and still save. We look at the basics of budgeting to set you in the right direction.
1. KICK PRICEY HABITS
Consider stopping expensive habits like smoking. This alone can save you R288 a month if you smoke just two packs a week at the average price of R36. That’s a saving of R3 456 a year! Quitting can also increase your points and discounts on health provider loyalty programmes, says Leandi Roos, a Durban-based healthcare consultant for a financial services group. In addition, it can lower life insurance premiums and eventually save you paying from your pocket for deadly smoking-related illnesses.
2. SAVE ON ENTERTAINMENT
Parks and libraries are free to use, as are many museums and art galleries – explore them with family and friends. Consider changing your cable subscription package. You can opt for a cheaper plan. Also, remember that for the price of just one movie, you can all be entertained for a month with DStv, Showmax or Netflix. Packages start at just R29 a month for EasyView Stream.
3. PLAN MEALS
You may have cut out most restaurant meals already, but takeaways and fizzy drinks also add up. Instead, prepare wholesome, economical meals (think bean or lentil-based stews, soups or pasta dishes). Freeze any leftovers for later meals, to take to work or to use as sandwich fillings. Plan your meals, limit visits to the shops and always take a list to prevent temptation buys. Consider growing veggies and herbs: you only need a door-sized patch or some pots.

4. CUT TRANSPORT COSTS
Although there’s little you can do about taxi costs, you could opt for less expensive public transport like a bus or train. If you drive a car, you can save by carpooling and cutting consumption in small ways. Plan your route and combine tasks to reduce driving time, keep windows closed to reduce drag, check wheel alignment, keep tyres at optimal inflation, clear your boot and drive slower.
5. SWITCH ON TO ELECTRICITY SAVINGS
Above all, reduce the temperature of your geyser. This is responsible for about 40% of your monthly electricity bill, so set it to 55°C or less and turn it off when you leave for work. You can also insulate it in a geyser blanket – buy one or make your own from aerolite material.
