Summer is still in full swing, and those party invites keep on coming. If you find it awkward to mingle, follow these handy tips to keep any conversation running smoothly.

1. Start with a shared experience

Known as an ‘observational conversation starter’, this technique involves starting a conversation based on an experience that you and the other person both share. Comment on the amazing food, the unique décor, or how you know the host. It’s an instant common ground that feels natural and gets others to chime in with their own thoughts.

2. Remember ford

FORD isn’t just a make of car, it’s also a handy acronym that can help you get a conversation started: Family, Occupation, Recreation, Dreams. These topics are generally safe and encourage people to open up about themselves. Just be sure to listen actively and ask follow-up questions that show genuine interest.

3. Focus on feeling

It’s easy to become focused on how awkward you feel – but the secret to good conversation is to focus on how the person you are speaking to feels. Make them feel good and your conversation is sure to flow. How? Compliments and humour. Don’t be afraid to make the other person laugh – and if you can’t think of anything funny to say, give genuine compliments and praise. It could be their appearance, their clothes, their demeanour or knowledge on a particular topic.

4. Master the graceful exit/entry

Learn to smoothly transition between groups by using phrases like “I should say hello to…” or “Have you met…?” This helps you avoid getting stuck and creates natural connections between guests.

5. Ask for recommendations

People love sharing their expertise (which is a polite way of saying: people love to give their opinion). Ask for travel tips, TV series or book recommendations. It makes people feel valued and often leads to enthusiastic discussions that pull in other guests.
