If you’re not feeling quite satisfied with how your living room looks, don’t worry! Here are some quick and easy fixes.

Lighten it up

Small spaces need light to appear larger. When choosing the paint for your walls, go for a lighter shade. If the colour turns out too light, you can always create depth and warmth with decor pieces like cushions and rugs.

Another way to embrace the room’s natural lighting or create the illusion of space is with a mirror. When placed in the right position, it can reflect natural light. You can place a round mirror on the wall or a standing mirror on the floor.

Soften bulky furniture

If you aren’t ready to buy new furniture just yet, simply adding softer elements can make bulky furniture pieces look less overwhelming. Simply toss a colourful throw onto the couch or place a vase with fresh flowers on a large sideboard.

Choose the best curtains

They play a big part in the overall look of your living room, so make sure your curtains are the right length, fabric and shade for the space. A good idea is to install a double curtain rod. You can then hang block-out curtains for extra cover, as well as sheer curtains to allow daylight in while maintaining privacy.

Make use of levels

In any small room, the storage options you choose make all the difference in how open the space looks. There are ways to use every part of the room to your advantage. On the walls, use floating shelves to create a spot for books, vases, candles, photo frames and decor pieces.

Choose furniture with extra storage compartments, like a coffee table with drawers. And opt for seating that doubles up as storage, like ottomans and benches that open to reveal hidden spots for everything from blankets to boardgames.

Clear the clutter

Unnecessary clutter can make any space look smaller. Take a look around your living room – do you spot damaged ornaments or items you no longer use? Instead of holding on to these items that no longer serve their purpose, donate them or give them away to someone who can use them.

If you notice waste piling up in a corner, clear it up and you’ll see a change instantly.
