If you’re into making New Year’s resolutions, often one of them will be for being healthier or fitter. Maybe you just want to feel your best self or get back into your fitness routine after the festive period! Whatever the case, there are a few tips to keep in mind when sticking to those fitness goals.

START SMALL AND TAKE THINGS SLOW

It’s unrealistic to jump into your old fitness routine or start a new one at the drop of a hat! Start with 15–30 minutes of light exercise a few times a week. After a while it’ll get easier and you can increase the length and type of exercise. Whether you’re doing a few lunges a day or waking up a little earlier for a hill run, start small and you’ll see the results!

STICK TO ONE WORKOUT

To reach a new fitness goal, it’s important not to overcomplicate things. Start things off with one form of exercise instead of throwing in everything you think will make you fitter. You’ll stay motivated and avoid burning out. Choose a workout that focuses on the area of your body you want to tone up, or a sport that you’ve always wanted to try. It could be dancing, swimming or a simple game of tennis.

START OR JOIN A FITNESS GROUP

If you’re not sure where to start, you could always sign up for a class or a group. There are many clubs for every type of exercise from hiking and cycling to yoga and Pilates. This is a great way to connect with others on their way to reaching their fitness goals, and to have a guided experience that will help you stay accountable.

MAKE IT FUN

Turn your moments of fitness into an opportunity to play. Whether it’s grabbing a ball and heading to the pool for some catch or ending your run at a café for a quick meet-up with the crew, fitness doesn’t have to be without a touch of creativity.
