December is around the corner, and you know what that means: festivities, holidays and lots of trips! Travelling with kids? Use these helpful tips to make sure your journey is a breeze – and fun for the whole family.

MAKE ROAD TRIPS FUN
Road trips with kids can still be fun if you prepare in advance. Our top three tips for surviving long journeys in the car? Snacks, water and fun activities.

  • For snacks, try to avoid sugary treats that will lead to explosive bursts of energy. Rather pack food like fruit, sandwiches, crackers and cheese. Try stopping off to eat – that way your kids will have the freedom to stretch and run around for a bit.
  • Pack bottles of water to make sure kids are hydrated. Using a bottle instead of a cup to drink water out of will also prevent unnecessary spills.
  • Keep kids busy with activities like their favourite toys or colouring books. Car games such as I spy that involve the entire family can also be loads of fun.

HELP MAKE FLIGHTS ENJOYABLE FOR EVERYONE
Flights can be daunting, especially when travelling with a baby or toddler. If you’re planning on taking a flight this holiday season, consider things like seating, air pressure and what will be included in your carry-on luggage.

  • Seating is important. Think of the food and beverage carts that pass by. If kids are seated in an aisle seat, the cart could unintentionally knock their hands.
  • Air pressure changes can cause your little one a lot of discomfort. If they recently had a cold or suffered from an ear infection, consider getting your doctor’s approval before flying. For the ascent and descent, let your kids drink some water after take-off and during the last 30 minutes of the flight. The motion of swallowing can help equalise and alleviate the pressure.
  • For your carry-on luggage, make sure you have everything you need to avoid a very unhappy toddler. Consider taking comfort items like a dummy, water for hydration, sanitiser for quick and easy cleaning, wet wipes for nappy changes and of course, nappies. Also consider low-sugar snacks to munch on, and perhaps a colouring book to keep them busy.

TRAVEL ESSENTIALS EVERY PARENT NEEDS
As a parent, you know what your little one needs to remain calm and happy. Here are a few of our top suggestions to consider.

  • Headphones. Whether your kids would like to listen to their favourite song or audiobook or watch their favourite show, headphones will come in handy – just remember to adjust the volume to a safe level first.
  • A portable change mat. You never know when your little one might need a nappy change. Having a change mat that you can simply whip out, wipe down and lay your baby on is so convenient!
  • A first-aid kit. Accidents happen so fast. Being prepared for little mishaps makes all the difference.
  • Window shades. If you’re travelling by car, the sun could irritate your little one.

Holidays are meant to be enjoyed. With these handy tips, you’ll (hopefully) say goodbye to tears and hello to fun-filled memories!
