We’ve all been there: December has snuck up on us, and we’ve left our holiday shopping till the last minute when shelves are empty and prices spike. You don't have to let it happen again. Here’s your guide to festive season prep, done well in advance.

1. Gifts

This is an obvious one but giving some serious thought to what gifts you’ll buy for your loved ones for the festive season now, well ahead of time, will save you so much hassle later. Consider starting a journal and in it you can list gift ideas for your partner, kids, family, friends, teachers, etc, as well as any other holiday prep you can start now. Then whenever you’re doing your monthly or weekly shopping, if you happen to encounter something on your list, pop it into your trolley. Sorted. No last-minute panic buying, queues or traffic jams required.

@breanamariep If you are still getting ready for the holiday season, I have a tip when you start shopping for next year. I start shopping in Augus. Honestly, this helps cut costs. Shopping for a big family can be really expensive so I start early and I just buy one gift every time I go to the store. Holidays can be tight and holidays can be very expensive. Hopefully this helps alleviate some stress. Happy Shopping. #earlyshopping #christmasprep #bigfamily #tiktokshop ♬ original sound - BreanaMarie | YourMomBestie

2. Beverages

Remember you’re not only preparing for one or two days; it also needs to be done for all the December and New Year holidays. Also, if you’re hosting during the holidays with a big clan, you’ll know how eye-watering the beverage bill can be. Start now and buy an extra bottle of wine, bubbly or soft drink when you go grocery shopping and stash it so you’re well stocked ahead of the festive season.

3. Festive decor

Obviously, the stores might not have holiday decor in stock just yet, but now is the time to work out if you have any gaps in your festive decoration collection. Map it out so that as soon as supermarkets start to deck the halls, you’ll be ready stock up on whatever you need well ahead of the last-minute crush. Don’t forget crackers and advent calendars for the kids!

4. Stocking fillers

From now until November, keep an eye out for discounted or on-sale stocking fillers that you can purchase when you do your usual shopping.  These are our suggestions:

  • For kids, think sweet treats, mini toys, squishies, fidgets, games, putty, slinkies or figurines.
  • For teens: tech accessories, gift vouchers, chocolate, beauty or grooming products, a bath bomb, rubix cube, water bottle or a stress ball.
  • Men: aftershave, a mini toolkit, personalised keychain, small Bluetooth speaker, a beanie, kitchen gadget or a mini flashlight.

5. Meal prep

No one wants to spend the festive season in busy stores buying groceries and then slaving the day away in the kitchen before hosting. Believe it or not, you can start prepping months in advance by filling your pantry with baking essentials, snacks, crackers, biscuits and nuts. One to two months in advance (if you have a chest freezer), you can prep roast potatoes. Just parboil an extra batch whenever you make some for dinner and freeze, so you can roast from frozen on the day. When it comes to veg like carrots, you can also peel, chop and parboil, then freeze in bags well ahead of time and roast from frozen. Stock up on turkey and gammon as soon as they appear in stores, buy frozen or freeze, then take out to defrost the night before, baste and roast the next day.
