5 celeb dads who have shared the spotlight with their kids
Father’s Day is a time to honour the dads who’ve shaped us – and in the world of South African entertainment, some famous fathers have gone a step further by teaming up with their children on creative projects, turning talent into legacy.
1. Johnny Clegg & Jesse Clegg
One of South Africa’s most legendary father-son duos, Johnny and Jesse Clegg often shared the stage and studio. Jesse, a talented musician in his own right, toured with his father and later performed moving tributes after Johnny’s passing. Their shared love of music and activism lives on in Jesse’s solo work.
2. Ringo Madlingozi & Phila Madlingozi
Ringo is a household name in Afro-soul, and his son Phila is following suit – not just as a musician, but also as an actor. The two have performed together on stage, and Phila often cites his father as his biggest influence, both musically and personally.
3. Will Smith & Jaden Smith
The Fresh Prince and his son have become one of Hollywood’s most iconic father-son duos. They starred together in The Pursuit of Happyness and later in After Earth. Will has also appeared in Jaden’s music videos, and the two share a love for pushing creative boundaries.

4. Dr John Kani & Atandwa Kani
Theatre and film legends in their own right, Dr Kani and his son Atandwa have worked together on stage and in international film. Notably, they both appeared in Marvel’s Black Panther – playing the same character at different ages. Their shared passion for performance makes them a powerful creative duo.
5. Denzel Washington, Malcolm, Katia & John David Washington
Netflix’s The Piano Lesson marked Malcolm Washington’s studio debut — and a true family affair. Premiering in August last year, the film stars his brother John David Washington and was produced by their sister Katia. Their father, Denzel, also co-produced the Netflix drama, which centres on siblings battling over a family heirloom. The film is dedicated to their mother, Pauletta: “For mama.”
