For quite some time, women of colour struggled to find products that specifically catered for their needs. From hair to skin care products, it’s only in recent years that celebrities and entrepreneurs summed up their influence and expertise to formulate products for the masses. We take a look at some beauty products founded by local and international celebrities and share what we love about them.

Founded in 2020, lelive. means ‘of the nation or world’ in Swazi. With sustainability at the forefront, the range is made from 95% natural ingredients. The aluminum packaging is recyclable, further amplifying the brand’s commitment to eco friendliness.

We love the all-natural, pregnancy-safe range that consists of cleansers, serums and moisturisers for different skin types. Plus, we really love that the ingredients are sourced in Africa.

Fenty by Rihanna

It goes without saying that BadGalRiri is a style and beauty icon. Emanating from her original name, Robyn Rihanna Fenty, Riri’s vast range of skincare and makeup products made for women of colour have taken the world by storm. With inclusivity at the brand’s core, the goal is to make everyone feel that Fenty aligns with their values and lifestyle.

The products have been recently made available in Africa, and although they are a bit on the pricier side – the quality promised will be worth every penny. We love that we can have girly fun with the endless options of shimmery products and colours.

Partnering with entrepreneur and founder of Afro Botanics, Ntombenhle Khathwane, Pearl Thusi’s range of natural hair products contains botanical oils and conditioning agents that support healthy hair. We love that Ntombenhle incorporates secrets shared with her by her grandmother from the 1930s, while partner, Archie Ntim, shared old age beauty practices from his native Ghana.

Speaking of the products in BONA magazine, face the Black Pearl range and co-owner, Pearl Thusi says, “I thought creating my own hair care line was beyond me until I met AfroBotanics founder Ntombenhle, who shared her inspirational story of how she started her business and by partnering with her, I was able to come up and create my own hair care line, Black Pearl.”

We love that Lerato uses her venture to help alleviate the struggles faced by young women who can’t afford sanitary wear – making a difference in the lives of women across South Africa

Both the lashes and sanitary towels were launched in women’s month in 2020.

Our August/September cover star, Tracee Ellis Ross, founded hair products for every curl type. ‘By Black hair for Black hair,’ the brand focuses on quality ingredients and boasts a vast range of accessories, styling and treatment products for natural, curly hair.

The product range comes in sizeable containers, something Ellis Ross highlighted the importance of as those curly and coily crowns require ample product. “I wanted to create a line of products that gave our hair the support it needed to be its true self,” says Ellis Ross.

What do we love? That the brand that embodies boldness – oh, and the funky black, white and yellow packaging!
