From combating period poverty to fighting climate change and building schools for the less fortunate, here are a few celebs who have made it their mission to make a difference.

Lerato Kganyago
TV personality and radio DJ Lerato Kganyago has used her voice and platform to call on others to join her fight against period poverty. She’s gone as far as to establish her own line of sanitary pads, Flutter by LKG. Early in 2021, she made the pads available to young women and girls in rural areas free of charge.

Siv Ngesi
Passionate about gender equality and women’s rights, actor and media personality Siv Ngesi regularly uses his social media platforms to speak out about the injustices women face daily. He also established MENstruation, a charity that hands out up to 20 000 sanitary pads every month.

Bonang Matheba
Inspired by the 2016 #FeesMustFall protests, media personality Bonang Matheba launched the Bonang Matheba Bursary Fund, which aims to give 300 young women access to tertiary education by 2025. “I believe that when you educate a girl child, you actually educate a community, and you educate a family.”

Nomzamo Mbatha
Actor and human rights activist Nomzamo Mbatha is dedicated to helping young South Africans get a superior quality education. In 2020, she became the first Cotton On Foundation ambassador in South Africa. In her role, she supports an organisation that is focused on empowering youth through education.

Katy Perry
Appointed a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 2013, Katy Perry is focused on using her platform to help children in need. After the birth of her daughter in 2020, she, along with partner Orlando Bloom, called for donations that would go towards helping pregnant women and infants gain access to medical healthcare like birthing facilities, vaccines, and medicine.

Leonardo DiCaprio
More than an actor, Leonardo DiCaprio uses every platform available to him to speak up about the climate crisis and creating a more sustainable future with plant-based products. He has made multiple investments in vegan companies, used his Oscar acceptance speech to address climate change and has started his own foundation, the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, renamed to re:wild, to protect wild animals like elephants.
