Q&A with Kgaogelo Monama

It took six years for Kgaogelo Monama (30), to get her big break, but now she’s starring in Mzansi Magic’s new drama, DiepCity. She is clear proof that determination and persistence pay off.
PLEASE TELL US ABOUT YOUR UPBRINGING?
I was a very energetic child who loved being part of community arts groups. I enjoyed drama and dancing and always fought to play the lead. My nickname growing up was CCV (CCV later became SABC 1). During ad breaks, I would stand in front of the TV and act out the scenes that just played before the break. Performing has always been my home. I’ve never thought of quitting. I find it therapeutic. When it is tough, I pray about it. I believe it is a part of me.
WHEN DID YOUR PROFESSIONAL ACTING CAREER START?
In 2013 when I played a waitress named Sarafina in Scandal! on e.tv. At the time, I was in my final year of studying drama and film at the Tshwane University of Technology. Since then, I’ve played in other productions such as Soul City, Lockdown and Thandeka’s Diary, among others.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR DIEPCITY CHARACTER, LERATO?
She is loyal but she loves money. She believes it will change her life, so she uses her beauty to get rich men to give her money, but it doesn’t always work in her favour.

WHAT DO YOU THINK VIEWERS LIKE ABOUT HER CHARACTER?
Her ‘don’t care’ attitude – she has no limits! She is optimistic and a go-getter, always ready for whatever life throws her way.
DID YOU FIND PLAYING HER CHALLENGING?
Yes, she does things that make me uncomfortable, but that’s the great thing about acting – you get to play someone else and step into their shoes.
“ …acting is in me! It’s in my blood. It isn’t easy, but I’ve never thought of quitting. I find it therapeutic. When it’s tough, I pray about it. I believe it’s a part of me.”

WHAT’S YOUR MESSAGE TO ASPIRING ACTORS?
It is definitely not easy. There is a lot of talent in South Africa – it sometimes feels our industry is too small to accommodate the amount of talent we have. So always bring your A game! Keep your eye on the prize, and never give up! Persistence, determination and patience are key. In the meantime, keep sharpening your craft.
