As temperatures drop, your skincare routine needs a seasonal shift. Dry patches, dullness and irritation? No thanks. Here are 3 tips to keep your skin soft and glowing in winter.

1. Up your water intake

It’s easy to forget how much your body needs water. Drinking enough of it and eating water-rich foods will keep you – and your skin – hydrated. When we are babies, approximately 75% of our body is water, and think how plump and smooth a baby’s skin is. By the time we reach middle age, our body’s water content can be as low as 50%. Unfortunately, skin ‘withers’ alongside the declining cell water content, displaying concerns such as fine lines and wrinkles, explains dermatologist Dr Howard Murad.

2. Tweak your skincare routine

You may have your skincare routine locked down for summer, but your skin’s needs may change during the colder months. That means that you may have to change some products, like opting for a gentler cleanser, or adding a rich moisturiser or mask to your evening skincare routine.

“My number one tip is to embrace using a richer product which protects the skin barrier to prevent moisture loss, especially for the evening routine, which can help maintain the skin barrier and prevent the need for prescribed treatments,” advises dermatologist Dr Beibei Du-Harpur. “Similarly, products marketed as ‘recovery masks’ often contain rich ingredients that are great for moisturising. Although petrolatum and mineral oils have had some bad press over the years, it is really quite undeserved and they are a key part of a dermatologists’ arsenal in managing many skin conditions, particularly dry skin. These ingredients essentially shield the skin and give it time to repair itself or maintain its natural barrier function.”

3. Don’t skimp on SPF

Only lathering SPF on hot summer days? Think again. While the sun may not shine as brightly, UVA rays can still do damage to your skin – even on cloudy days. Although UVB levels do drop in winter, “UVA rays are potent all year long,” says Cape Town dermatologist Dr Dilshaad Asmal. “Eighty percent of the sun’s rays can still penetrate cloud cover in winter. UVA is always present and harms deeper skin layers, damaging collagen in your skin, causing fine lines and wrinkles that lead to premature ageing.”

It’s better to stay protected than to be sorry later. #sunscreen #sunscreenisimportant #yestospf #sunscreenforpoc #sunscreenforblackpeople #sunscreentipsandhack #sunscreentips #sunscreenfacts ♬ original sound - Dr. Natasha Henry
