5 habits that can lead to radiant skin

Everyday habits can undermine even the best skincare routines, leaving your complexion dull, uneven or prone to breakouts. Here are five common mistakes that could be sabotaging your skin goals and how to fix them for a radiant glow.
1. Use skincare products that match your skin's needs
Choosing high quality products is important, but these products won’t be effective if they are not matched to your skin’s specific needs. According to the American Academy of Dermatology (ADD), using products formulated for your skin’s needs will help your skin look and feel its best: What’s your skin type – oily, dry, normal, combination or sensitive? Do you have a skin condition? How about spots or pigmentation? Choose your products accordingly.

2. Consider double cleansing
“Clear skin starts with cleansing. Make sure you’re removing all your make–up and sunscreen at the end of the day with a double cleansing routine consisting of an oil-based cleanser followed by a water-based cleanser,” explains dermatologist Dr Connie Yang.
@kiyokobeauty HOW TO DOUBLE CLEANSE in a few easy steps for Beginners! 💖 1. Wash your hands and dry them 2. Pump cleansing oil on your face and rub it in for 1 minute (don’t get lazy here, do the full 1 minute to break down all the oil and sebum) 3. Get a bit of water going to emulsify 4. Rinse off 5. Use a foam or gel cleanser, rub into face (to rinse off water-based gunk) 6. Rinse off ⭐ Products mentioned: Anua Heartleaf Pore Cleansing Oil Anua Heartleaf Quercetinol Pore Deep Cleansing Foam All of these products can be shopped at www.Kiyoko.com ✨ #doublecleansing #skincaretips #skincare101 #skincareforbeginners #skincarehacks ♬ Soñar (Breaker) - NMIXX
3. Wear sunscreen daily – even when it’s cloudy
Just because you’re not getting direct sunlight, doesn’t mean UV rays aren’t reaching your skin and causing damage. “On a cloudy day, there are about 20% less UV rays than what you would get on a sunny day,” says dermatologist Shilpi Khetarpal. “[But] even when you’re driving or sitting near a window, those UVA rays can dull our skin and cause pigmentation.” She recommends wearing sunscreen of 30 SPF or higher every day.

4. Manage stress
There is a wealth of evidence that chronic stress can negatively impact not only our mental health, but our physical health too, and that includes our skin. “Some skin diseases like psoriasis and atopic dermatitis (eczema) often appear for the first time when someone feels really stressed,” reports ADD. “Stress can also cause flare-ups of many skin conditions, including acne, eczema, psoriasis and rosacea.” Seek out healthy ways to manage stress such as mindfulness, meditation, yoga, regular exercise or therapy. Also focus on quality sleep, as a lack of this can exacerbate stress.
@drwhitneybowe It’s that time again – Daylight Savings. At least it’s fall back instead of spring ahead . . . 😬 It’s a good time to focus on healthy sleep habits because “beauty sleep” actually does make a difference. Let’s talk about 4 ways that chronic stress and poor sleep can impact your skin: Accelerated skin aging because our skin’s production of collagen and hyaluronic acid are slowed down Compromises our skin barrier because our skin’s production of ceramides slows down too. Slows our wound healing response in the skin, so we heal more slowly after a cut, scrape or burn Increases the production of oils like sebum, triggering breakouts #dermatology #dermatologist #drwhitneybowe #daylightsavings #beautysleep ♬ original sound - Dr. Whitney Bowe
5. Stay hydrated
It can be tempting to think that your quality moisturiser (ideally one with moisture–friendly ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerine or ubiquinone) is enough to keep skin hydrated, but if you’re not also hydrating from the inside, you’re missing out on an important hydration source for your skin. “When you get dehydrated, your skin cells do too, and it opens up cracks in your skin that could let in toxins from the environment, products that are coming into contact with your skin and things that are going to irritate it,” says dermatologist Dr Daniel Schlessinger. He recommends drinking plenty of water throughout the day. The US National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine determined that an adequate daily fluid intake is about 15,5 cups (3,7 litres) of fluids a day for men and about 11,5 cups (2,7 litres) of fluids a day for women (from both beverages and foods).
