Dermatologists spill the top tips they wish everyone knew sooner. SPF, moisturisation, exfoliation – your skin’s new best friends.

1. SPF is not just for summer

That’s right, sunscreen isn’t only for sunny beach days. A broad-spectrum SPF 30-50 (or higher, depending on your skin type) should be part of your daily routine, even when it’s cloudy or you’re mostly indoors. Dermatologist Dr Tanja Phillips says, “I wish I’d known to use SPF come rain or shine. I tell patients of every age that SPF will save them spending a fortune seeing people like me for pigmentation reduction, loss of collagen and wrinkles.” So, make SPF your new bestie. Your skin will thank you.

2. Invest in a good moisturiser

Moisturisers are like multitasking magicians for your skin. Think of them as your skin’s daily dose of defence and TLC, all in one swipe. “Moisturisers help our skin barrier by providing lipids, protecting us from external chemicals and providing water to our sometimes-parched skin,” explains dermatologist Vermén Verallo-Rowell.

3. Don’t forget to exfoliate

Dreaming of smoother, brighter skin? Exfoliation is key – but go easy. Overdoing it can irritate your skin, especially with sun exposure. For best results, exfoliate gently at night and always follow up with sunscreen the next morning to protect your fresh glow. “I think that everyone should exfoliate with a chemical exfoliant at least three times a week,” recommends dermatologist Dr Corey L Hartman.
