’Tis the season of sand, sun and fun.

’Tis is also the season of lathering up and keeping our visors close to protect our skin. Here are five tips to look after your skincare routine during the hot, sweaty days.

1

LATHER UP ON SUNSCREEN

Although you should already be lathering up every day, it’s essential to prioritise using a sunscreen of SPF 30 (or higher) during summer to protect your skin from those harmful UV rays. Adding a layer of sunscreen to all your exposed skin (don’t forget behind your ears) should be the last step in your summer skincare routine.

“It is also important to note that sunscreen needs to be reapplied every couple of hours, so make sure to pack extra sunscreen for longer summer days outdoors,” says dermatologist Omer Ibrahim.

KEEP YOUR SKIN CLEAN

With all the added sweat and grime that comes with being out in the sun all day, ensure you wash your face properly. Use a hydrating face wash and get into all the nooks and crannies but be gentle (especially around your eyes). “Since you’re sweating more during the summer months due to outdoor activities or simply being more active, I also recommend washing your face up into your hairline as well — this area is usually overlooked, which can result in breakouts along the hairline or the outer edges of your face,” says Dr Melanie Palm, dermatologist and founder of Art of Skin MD

3

USE A LIGHT MOISTURISER

Ditch the extra-hydrating and rich face creams you use in winter, and opt for a lighter moisturiser. Remember, that extra layer of sweat does not count as a moisturiser. “I’m all about putting away the petrolatum and thick moisturisers and switching to light hyaluronic-acid-based moisturizers,” says dermatologist Dr Karan Lal.

4

EXFOLIATE, EXFOLIATE, EXFOLIATE

Remember, a good scrub will keep dull skin at bay! Exfoliation helps to give you a brighter and smoother complexion. But be careful not to over-exfoliate your skin during summer. The sun takes a toll on your skin, so do it gently. Bonus tip: Exfoliate at night and follow up with sunscreen in the morning. “I think that everyone should exfoliate with a chemical exfoliant at least three times a week,” says dermatologist Dr Corey L Hartman.
