Foundation brush
These come in various shapes and sizes to suit different application techniques. For a natural, lightweight result, opt for a fluffy brush that diffuses product evenly. For fuller coverage, use a dense, firm synthetic brush that buffs product into the skin. Flat brushes work best with liquid or cream foundations, while rounded brushes are ideal for powder formulas. Always start at the centre of your face and blend outwards.
Concealer brush
Made for targeting small, specific areas, concealer brushes allow for precise application under the eyes or over blemishes. Choose synthetic brushes with tightly packed bristles and tapered or pointed heads to ensure even coverage and maximum control.
Powder brush
No make-up routine is complete without one of these. Its large, fluffy bristles lightly distribute loose or pressed powder across the skin, setting make-up without disturbing the base underneath. To use it, dip the brush into your powder, tap off the excess and apply using light sweeping or circular motions from the centre of your face outwards. When setting make-up, gently pat the powder on, especially under the eyes and around the nose, for a smooth, long-lasting finish.
Angled face brush
A versatile must-have, this one makes sculpting and highlighting effortless. The soft yet firm bristles have a broad, flat edge for sweeping on bronzer and a tapered edge for precise highlighter placement. To define your features, apply bronzer in a ‘3’ shape from forehead to cheekbones and along the jawline. Then, use the tip to dust highlighter over the tops of your cheekbones, bridge of the nose and cupid’s bow for a natural, radiant glow.
Blusher brush
Slightly smaller than a powder brush, it has fluffy, dome-shaped bristles for smooth, even colour payoff. Apply blusher to the apples of your cheeks and blend upwards towards your cheekbones.
Fluffy eyeshadow brush
A fluffy brush is your go-to for applying shadow across the eyelid. Its soft bristles are perfect for blending colours for a seamless finish. Use it to apply transition shades in the crease and to soften any harsh edges for a well-blended eye look.
Brow brush
Well-groomed brows frame the face and enhance your eyes. The ideal brow brush is dual-ended, with an angled tip for precise application of pomade, powder or wax, and a spoolie to comb and shape.
Lip brush
This small, flat brush is designed for precise lipstick application and clean edges. Use it to shape and define your lips or for applying bold colours with control and precision.
Which brush is best?
Not all brushes are created equal. Here’s what to look for:
Bristle Type:
Synthetic bristles are best for cream and liquid products, as they don’t absorb excess product and deliver a smooth, streak-free finish. Natural bristles, usually made from animal hair, have tiny cuticles that grip and blend powder pigments beautifully. They’re ideal for powder-based make-up like eyeshadow, blusher and bronzer, creating a soft, natural-looking finish on the skin.
Density:
Brushes with densely packed bristles are ideal for building coverage and blending creams or liquids. Loose, fluffy ones work best for a soft, diffused powder finish. The denser the brush, the more product it picks up; looser-packed bristles create a lighter, more natural result.
Handle and Ferrule:
Look for brushes with sturdy handles and tightly fitted ferrules (the metal part holding the bristles). Loose ferrules can shed bristles and shorten brush life.

Caring for your brushes
Wash regularly:
Clean brushes once a week with a gentle soap or mild shampoo.
Dry flat:
Lay brushes flat to dry; standing them upright will cause bristle damage.
Store upright:
Keep brushes upright in a holder or case to maintain shape and hygiene.
Deep-clean monthly:
Use a silicone mat or specialised cleanser to remove build-up.
