Tips to steer clear of common styling mistakes

MISTAKE #1: NOT FINDING THE RIGHT FIT
No matter how great that garment looks on that mannequin, if you don’t find your exact fit it probably won’t be as flattering on you (no matter the price tag). Try not to leave the store before you fit the clothes on. Is your clothing too long? Find a good tailor to make minor adjustments for it to fit perfectly. Tailored clothing looks neat, tidy and as if that piece of clothing was made for you.
MISTAKE #2: BUYING EVERY FASHION TREND
You don’t have to run to the shops every time a new fashion trend makes an appearance. Invest in a few classics to build your capsule wardrobe.
What’s a capsule wardrobe you may ask? It’s a collection of your most essential pieces that could allow you to create different looks. Even better – they work for every season. Pair, layer and create different styles and looks. When you have the basics, add on and experiment with more trendy items to make every outfit pop!
Items to include in your capsule wardrobe:
– a pair of great fitting jeans
– at least two pairs of shoes (a versatile sneaker and a dressier shoe, like a pair of heels)
– a classic of outerwear like a coat, blazer or jacket
– a pair of button-up shirts
– a collection of plain t-shirts
– a classic A-line dress
– a neutral-coloured suit to mix and match casual and formal pieces with
MISTAKE #3: FORGETTING HAIR AND MAKE-UP
We spend so much time and effort putting an outfit together that we often forget that our hair and make-up complete the look. And no, we are not talking about a full face of make-up and an up-do every day at work. Focus on what look will match your outfit best. If you are wearing a colourful outfit, keep your make-up natural with a nude lip. A natural eye and bold red lip pairs well with a white shirt and jeans.
MISTAKE #4: DRESSING INAPPROPRIATELY
Always read the room for the event you are attending. While incorporating your own personal style is always encouraged, dress for where you are heading. Are you invited to a wedding? Sneakers and a crop top won’t cut it. Not only will you look (and feel) out of place, but it could be seen as disrespectful for the event you are attending. You don’t need a new outfit for every occasion. Keep a few classic dressier pieces in your wardrobe (like an A-line dress or a figure-flattering jumpsuit). Pair it with heels or wedges and you’re good to go. The same goes for your work wear. Make sure you adhere to the rules of your dress code. Dress appropriately, but make it fashionable, okay?
