Denim has been used to make workwear since the early 20th century. But just because it’s durable, doesn’t mean it’s unaffected by improper care. Don’t skip the TLC and make your denims last for longer with our tips.

MINIMISE WASHING

The more you wear denim, the better it becomes! Try not to be too quick with throwing your denim pieces in the wash. Frequent washing can cause a change in fit, thinning of the denim and fading of the colour. Opt to only wash it once every 10–15 wears or when visibly dirty. If you feel it needs a refresh, you can spray it with a homemade deodorizer or pop it in the freezer!

BE DELICATE

When you do have to wash your denims, follow the wash instructions on the label; wash on a delicate setting and use a mild detergent fit for denim. Hand washing in cold water is recommended to prevent the colour from fading.

LET THEM HANG

 Hang your denims inside-out and away from direct sunlight when drying. You can steam your jeans after they have dried to get out any wrinkles and make the fabric soft and wearable again.

MAKE FRIENDS WITH YOUR TAILOR

Get your jeans shortened to avoid fraying or ripping the hem – a pair of super-long jeans can also be unsightly. You can also get the waist taken in for a perfect fit. Remember: a perfect fit means better wearing pleasure! When it comes to those pairs of jeans that are beyond saving, consider upcycling them into a pair of shorts, a skirt or even a bucket hat!

PACK THEM PERFECTLY

Packing your denim away properly is important in the long-term care of your pieces. Make a little extra effort to pack your items away properly to avoid creases and ensure more space. Hang your denim jackets on hangers and fold your jeans perfectly so you know exactly what wash or style you’re grabbing.
