While the COVID-19 pandemic made a lot of people introspect and go on journeys of self-discovery, it brought others closer together for a lifetime. Bringing two families together and the wedding celebrations are at the core of every union, but the star of the show – and quite literally, is always the ring. The tagline ‘diamonds are a girl’s best friend’ always rings true when it comes to all things that bling. We take a look at some of the engagement ring trends from 2021 and a closeup on some celebrities’ choices.
GOLD MADE A COMEBACK
There was a period when rose gold was the trendiest engagement metal, and with other types of jewellery like bracelets, earrings, and necklaces. But in 2021 yellow gold returned to its timeless stance – not only for rings, but with jewellery across the board.
ONLINE EXPERIENCE
Over the past two years, it has made more sense to shop online for obvious reasons. And while this steals away from window shopping, online shopping has increased the engagement ring and wedding band shopping experience. Husbands to be and couples do a bit of research and are more involved in the selection process.

SUSTAINABLE JEWELLERY
While sustainability is the latest buzzword in most industries, it is something that a lot of people take quite seriously. With all sorts of effects and damage to the planet, like waste and harmful carbon emissions, it’s sensible to stop and think how each purchase is affecting the world. Instead of mined diamonds, the conscious consumer prefers lab-grown diamonds and recycled gold.
RING DESIGNS
Halo settings continue to dominate as the preferred choice. This style is available in different shapes such as round, oval, and square. The latest trend emanating from the traditional halo designs is the hidden halo which is several small diamonds set under the one in the centre, only visible from the side. And whichever way this all-time favourite design may be reinterpreted, it will continue to shine.
Another classic and timeless style that has made a steady return in 2021 is the Solitaire style. After what some deem as a chaotic year, the elegance and simplicity of this style is what one needs.
The love for thick and chunky jewellery has seen the return of the gypsy ring design. The ring boasts a thick band with the diamond, at the same height as the metal, mounted right in the middle.
The teardrop shape has been popular in the jewellery realm for a very long time, from earrings to necklaces. Now emerging in rings, the pear cut diamond made its way to becoming one of the trendiest cuts in 2021.

Amanda’s engagement ring is the classic halo setting. Hubby, Shawn Rodriquez, popped the question while they were on a bae-cation in the Maldives.
