Touted as a ‘tale of brotherhood and boxing from one of South Africa’s literary masters’, The Distance is set in Verwoerdburg in 1970, where 12-year-old Joe is Muhammad Ali’s greatest fan. So obsessed is he that he keeps scrapbooks filled with hundreds of pictures and articles about his hero. We jump to 40 years later, and Joe is a writer struggling to give expression to the novel he knows is within him. In order to do so he must consult his old newspaper clippings as well as his brother Branco, because the story that needs to be told involves not just Ali, but Joe and Branco too. Well worth reading even if you aren’t a boxing fan, not least for its unexpected, spine-tingling revelation…
