9 CURVY FASHIONS MYTHS!

We’re busting fashion myths for the curvy woman. Here are 9 silly myths about how curvy girls should dress.

MYTH 1: HORIZONTAL STRIPES MAKE YOU LOOK WIDER
The truth: “No matter the direction of the stripe (diagonal, vertical, horizontal or chevron), you look like you’re in them, so there’s no reason to shy away from horizontal striped pieces,” says Tarryn Oppel, Jet Club Fashion Editor.

The trick here is styling. Worn with a darker base (eg black pants or dark blue jeans), horizontal stripes add edge to an outfit – Christina Hendricks ticks all the boxes. A light-fabric jacket also creates an interesting look.

MYTH 2: SKINNY JEANS AREN’T FOR CURVY PEOPLE
The truth: Oh yes they are! As long as you observe the following: stick to dark washes like black, charcoal or indigo blue, pair with drapey tops or tunics to create balance and wear them with heels to elongate your body like Octavia Spencer. Steer clear of very chunky platform wedges though. (Save them for wearing with wide-leg jeans.) “You’re after a sleek, streamlined effect. If you love wearing your skinny jeans with sneakers, try pairing them with a longer length denim jacket or blazer to balance proportions,” says Tarryn.

MYTH 3: DARK COLOURS ARE SLIMMING
The truth: Dark colours are chic, but in summer they can also be very hot! Wearing one bright colour in a softer fabric works wonders, and patterned accents like Yvette Nicole Brown, in tropical or Aztec prints actually detract attention away from your figure. If you insist on hiding behind dark clothing, make sure the fabric is airy (eg chiffon) and inject some colour with fun, bold and bright accessories alike.

MYTH 4: ALWAYS WEAR LOOSE-FITTING CLOTHING
The truth: Unless you enjoy looking like a parachute, ditch this piece of advice, fast! Form-fitting clothing – as opposed to tight clothing – creates a womanly silhouette and allows you to accent an outfit with belts to create shape. This form-fitting dress looks Glee-ful on Amber Riley. Remember baggy clothing makes you look bigger.

MYTH 5: ANIMAL PRINT IS BEST LEFT TO THE ANIMALS
The truth: Cleverly worn, animal print can be very flattering and chic. Stick to small prints in natural tones (large, loud animal print in unnaturally bright black and white doesn’t look good on anybody). For the ultimate slimming effect, look for patterns with darker backgrounds. All you need to add is a figure-sculpting black or brown belt for balance. Animal print is the new black for Danielle Brooks. Tip: never, ever wear more than one animal-print piece together unless you want to look like a walking zoo!

MYTH 6: CURVY GIRLS SHOULD COVER UP!
The truth: Curvy girls tend to hide their flaws by layering heavily. Actually the more sweaters and coats you pile on, the heavier you’ll look. Be bold, show some skin, it’s sexy and slimming. Like Adele, you may start by exposing your wrists, collarbones, or ankles which will draw attention to the slimmest parts of your body. Keep necklines open – a simple V-neck flatters a bigger bust and lengthens your neck or go for a crop top and a high waist skirt as long as it accentuates the slimmest part of your waist.

MYTH 7: BIG ACCESSORIES MAKE YOU LOOK BIGGER
The truth: The right accessories can turn any dreary outfit into a show-stopper. Choose bold, statement accessories over fiddly delicate designs as these will look more in proportion with your shape. With necklaces, earrings, bangles or bags, go as big as you like! Tarryn says, no matter your size, don’t over-compensate and be sure to pick one statement piece at a time, like Gabourey Sidibe.

MYTH 8: DON’T WEAR MAXI DRESSES OR YOU’LL LOOK LIKE A TENT.
The truth: Nonsense! A maxi dress can be flattering – especially when worn with a belt to accentuate your curves. A relatively low V-neck also adds balance. But length matters! “Maxi dresses, although all long, come in various lengths. Pick one that is ankle-grazing to reveal some skin,” adds Tarryn. Pair it with pretty strappy sandals or open-toe heels like Queen Latifah does to complement the look. So go for it!

MYTH 9: STILETTOS ARE RESERVED FOR THIN PEOPLE!
The truth: Anyone who says this to you, is just mistaken. Heels are for each and every woman who wants to wear them! The common belief here is that because heels elongate your lower body, they make the upper body look bigger. Actually heels slim your legs down and make you look taller and sleeker like Mariah Carey. So step into style and pair them with dresses, pants and ethnic wear.
