HOW TO WEAR ATHLEISURE

The perfect combination of street style and sportswear, athleisure is the go-to trend for fashion-forward individuals.

Clothing originally designed for gym and athletic activities has now been modified into clothes that you can wear anywhere from the workplace, to drinks with friends. The athleisure trend is all about being comfortable, yet stylish and chic. Leggings, hoodies, sneakers and caps are just a few of the activewear items that can now be worn for both exercising and for daywear. This sporty trend is said to be part of the global change in lifestyle where people are aiming to be healthier even with jam-packed schedules.

Here’s how you can ace the athleisure trend!

FASHION MEETS FUNCTION
Athleisure is all about looking fashionable and being comfortable at the same time. It's convenient in that you’re able to mix your regular wardrobe with athletic pieces or gym clothing. Pull items such as denims, leather jackets and high heels from your wardrobe and team it with exercise gear such as sweat pants, yoga pants and sneakers.

THE RIGHT OCCASION
Although athleisure is quite versatile, you need to be mindful of the type of occasion you’re going to before deciding on your outfit. For instance, you wouldn’t wear it for a job interview, and it’s definitely not appropriate for a wedding. It’s perfect though for when you’re headed for a lunch date or casual evening with friends.

ACCESSORISE CORRECTLY
To complete your look, you need to accessorise with relevant pieces that have the same vibe as your outfit. Simple pairings in clean and basic colours will add the perfect touch to your ensemble, but you have to be tactical about it. Keep your accessories in basic shapes and within the sporty angle. Choose items such as aviator sunglasses, hooped earrings or a solid colour cap to pull it all together. Or take a page from Reginae Carter’s book and top your look off with a trendy backpack. These add-ons will complement your look and not distract from your outfit.

SOME TIPS FOR THE GUYS

  • Choose fitted hoodies and golfers to pair with your favourite denims or even suit trousers – they’ll add a casual edge to your office style but you’ll still look sharp.
  • Don’t wear shapeless or oversized items. Wearing something a few sizes too big will only make you look scruffy. Stick to more tailored items.
  • Opt for neutral colours when styling an athleisure look for work. Choose easy-to-wear colours such as navy, white, khaki and black which can smarten up more casual items – a functional khaki or navy bomber is a perfect choice.
  • Introduce one or two casual items normally reserved for off-duty into your work wardrobe – think a fitted golfer teamed with your favourite chinos and a pair of sleek sneakers. In winter, throw on a bomber jacket to keep you warm.
  • While it is a sports-inspired look, athleisure is not meant to be worn for workouts. Avoid stepping out in a full tracksuit and trainers – unless you’re hitting the gym for a sweat session.
  • Opt for a pair of sleek and stylish sneakers – choose a bright and funky pair to make a real statement or keep it low-key with a neutral colour.
  • Leave those old worn-out gym shoes for exercise. The suit-and-sneakers look only works if you choose your footwear carefully – no dirty trainers!
