OUR FAVOURITE MOMENTS FROM THE MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS

The biggest names in music gathered at the Prudential Centre in New Jersey on the 26 August for the long-awaited MTV’s Video Music Awards.

It’s no surprise the evening was filled with spectacular performances and jaw-dropping red carpet moments, and we’ve rounded up our must-see looks of the evening.

This year’s VMA’s was jam-packed with music icons, such as Queen Latifah, Missy Elliot and even actor John Travolta made an appearance on the red carpet. However, pop culture’s newer music acts such as H.E.R, Lil Nas X and Lizzo made their mark on the VMA stage and cemented their place in the music scene while scooping up a few awards.

This year the spotlight belonged to hip-hop legend Missy Elliot. She received the Michael Jackson Vanguard Award, which is generally awarded to music performers, recognising their accomplishments in music and film. Not only is Missy Elliot a talented rapper, but she is also a singer, songwriter, dancer, producer, and philanthropist and has worked with countless big names in the industry. She received a standing ovation from the audience and in her emotional acceptance speech she said: “I have worked diligently for over two decades and I never thought I would be standing up here receiving this award”.

The level of talent at this year’s VMA’s was just outstanding! Pop star, Normani and former member of the music group ‘Fifth Harmony’ set the stage on fire giving a stellar performance of her new single ‘Motivation’. The stage was set with a basketball court matched with incredible choreography and her unforgettable dance solo.

H.E.R
What an awesome way to make an entrance! R&B artist H.E.R arrived on the red carpet in a green floral suit with a rather unexpected accessory – a python on her shoulders! H.E.R turned heads and had the paparazzi in a frenzy taking pictures and other guests looking on with utter shock. Having recently won a Grammy award she was nominated in three VMA categories including Best New Artist award.

LIZZO
With her ‘larger than life’ personality singer Lizzo arrived on the red carpet looking fierce in a fiery red show-stopping number by designer Moschino. The singer is known to make very bold fashion choices and she made quite a statement with her sequined gown with the word ‘Siren’ all over it, a red feather boa and a beehive to complete the look.

KEKE PALMER
Keke Palmer looked super glam in a glittering yellow Swarovski-embellished Yousef Aljasmi gown accessorised with a bejewelled cell phone. She kept her hair and make-up simple, with only her dress standing out. This look deserves a spot on the ‘best-dressed list’ for the evening.

QUEEN LATIFAH
Queen Latifah made her appearance on the red carpet in an elegant and bright orange Sergio Hudson suit featuring a fringe trim. Queen Latifah later closed the ceremony by riding on a motorcycle and performed old hip-hop classic U.N.I.T.Y.

NORMANI
Normani knows how to make an entrance and this year’s VMA’s gave her a huge platform to shine. She wore an embellished Nicolas Jebran cutout, strapless dress with a ultra-high slit that showed off her curves and amazing abs.

LIL NAS X
Lil Nas X stayed true his cowboy persona and arrived in a silver sequined suit and metallic cowboy boots. He was one of the major winners for the night, his smash hit ‘Old Town Road’ spent a record-breaking 19 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, and took home the award for song of the year.
