THE PANTS EDIT: THIS SEASON’S TOP PANTS STYLES

Step into the new season in style with the latest in pants trends for him and her.

Warmer weather is on its way, and we’re ready to switch our denims out for breezy bottoms. So what are the top pants styles for spring/summer 2019?

PAPER-BAG PANTS

THE LOOK: With a high rise elastic band and a culotte shape, these 80’s inspired pants were made for comfort and style.

BEST DRESSED: The key to getting the style right is to tuck a tee or shirt into the waist for a more polished look. Dress up for work or a more sophisticated event by pairing with heels and a blazer. Downtime deserves a step up too, so kick on those trendy sneakers with a seasonal sweater and lounge about in style.

UTILITY PANTS

THE LOOK: A modern tapered cut in enhanced military green and true-to-style side pockets.

BEST DRESSED: Whether you’re bringing back ‘90s grunge or channelling modern minimalism, these are the cargo pants to buy now. Style them with pumps and a loose-fitting blouse for daytime and glam up for night events with a slim-fitting tuxedo jacket and sexy heels.

CASUAL PANTS
THE LOOK: High-waisted and wide-legged, this vertical stripe option is super flattering.

BEST DRESSED: Take a break from the skinny and loosen up a bit with summers most flattering must-have item. The loose fit of the pants skims over your curves effortlessly and the high waist elongates your lower half. Keep your look chic and cool with flats in sneakers or sandals, tucked-in tees and for a little va-va-voom pair with a cropped biker jacket.

CARGO PANTS

THE LOOK: A relaxed fit with an elasticated waist and a cuffed hem that hugs the ankle.

BEST DRESSED: Cargo pants are given the mistaken identity of being the man pants. By pairing more feminine items like a romantic blouse, it will balance out the masculinity of the baggy bottoms. To give any outfit some womanly flair, add a pair of heels. They need not be stilettos but a kitten heel will do to lift and boost.

LINEN PANTS

THE LOOK: Perfectly tapered in a lightweight fabric – this style is ideal for season-transitioning.

BEST DRESSED: Work, brunch or beach, this look has got you covered. Match your linen pants with a longline blazer in the same colour to create a classic, cool and still sophisticated outfit.

Men, we haven’t forgotten about you! From tapered to engineerd and in between – it’s all in the detail this season.

HOW TO FIND YOUR FIT
Regular, straight or tapered? Not sure what the difference is? Don’t worry, this easy guide will help you.

REGULAR

THE FIT:
The regular fit sits higher in the waist and cut straight from the hip to the ankle. A classic fit with room to move, a great balance between style and comfort.

TOP TIP: The regular fit jeans aka the Dad Denims is trending right now so pull out your ‘ol trusties and wear them proudly. For an update on this look roll the hem to expose your ankle.

WEAR WITH: Pair these jeans with a denim jacket, boat shoes and a golfer tee and you’ll be in with the cool crew.

STRAIGHT
THE FIT: Sits just below the waist with a straight leg as it’s the same size all the way through. This comfortable fit is the perfect choice for everyday wear.

TOP TIP: Be careful when choosing straight leg jeans, some fits are cut wider than others and you want to avoid looking like you’re drowning in yours.

WEAR WITH: Choose a dark wash denim that will last through the season and you’ll get more wear out of it than a coloured pair. The straight leg jeans is a classic style so pair with a T-shirt and brogues.

TAPERED
THE FIT: This shape has a longer rise with more room in the thigh, tapering down into a narrower leg. The perfect combination of straight and slim.

TOP TIP: Tapered jeans are good for guys with a chunkier build.

WEAR WITH: Layer this casual fit with a tee and a shirt. It’s not the most classic fit but a run between what you’d wear to work versus hanging out with the guys.

ENGINEERED
THE FIT: Lower rise, more room on the hip, crotch and thigh, tapering down to a narrow hem. This ergonomic design follows the natural shape of the leg for a comfortable fit and unencumbered movement.

TOP TIP: Try on a few pairs of jeans to compare fit and comfort before making a bold choice.

WEAR WITH: The jean pant for the edgy streetstyler. Be bold and opt for a coloured denim. It shows the inseam detail off more which is what you want when going for a stylish pair of jeans. Pop on those bold kicks, snap on a flatbill cap and it’s game on.

SLIM
THE FIT: Sits lower on the waist and slimmer through the thigh, knee and leg. For guys who want a slimmer look but like enough room to move, a modern classic.

TOP TIP: Go for something trim, but not tight.

WEAR WITH: The slim fit jeans is rather a classic for when you need to look clean and polished. Like a semi-formal event. The slim fit is workwear friendly too. Be sure to choose a darker shade with a smart button-up shirt. Keeping the fades for the weekend.

JOGGER
THE FIT: This fit has a lower rise with more room in the hip, crotch and thigh, tapering down to an elasticated narrow hem.

TOP TIP: Be ready to show a little ankle.

WEAR WITH: The jogger is not just for the sports guy any longer. Following the very current athleisure trend, joggers have become a wardrobe staple and is a must for the guy dominating the street style scene. While joggers are intended to appear casual and relaxed, pairing them with a basic T-shirt will nail the weekender look. You can dress it by adding a blazer to get a part polished, part relaxed combo. But opt for a less structured blazer.

DENIM 101
- Look at the different brands of jeans and find one that fits your body type. Some jeans are more conservative and others on the trendier side.
- Slim fit, straight and skinny are your go-to safe options for the average build guy.
- Do double denim whether it’s a denim shirt and jeans or denim jacket and jeans. But make sure there is a clear contrast in the shade so it doesn’t look like you’re wearing a onesie.
