HOW TO CREATE A ROMANTIC VALENTINE’S DAY DINNER

Setting the scene is an essential part of planning the perfect Valentine’s dinner with your partner. Here’s how to use all your senses to create a magical evening.

THE PERFECT SPOT
Set your imagination free and create a cosy, romantic cocoon for your date-night dinner. If you like things grand and sophisticated, create a formal table setting with an elegant tablecloth, all the cutlery, crockery, glasses and napkins. A beautiful bunch of flowers will add a finishing touch. If you’re looking for a more relaxed, bohemian atmosphere, arrange soft and sensuous cushions around the coffee table.

Throw a richly coloured cloth over it and use a living potplant as the centrepiece. Make it an interactive dining experience with the two of you sharing a meal and feeding one another. If you don’t have a coffee table, set up a picnic on your living room floor – or outside if the weather permits and you have the space.

LIGHT THE WAY
Soft lighting is the first rule of a romantic setting. Eyes are said to be the windows to the soul, so light your way with flickering candlelight. Use candles in different sizes, shapes and colours. For a formal table use tall candle holders, while fat, round or squat ones will add intimacy to your informal table. Not only are they romantic, they also add a beautiful touch of warmth and colour. If you don’t have candles, dim the lights and drape coloured fabrics over any standing, table or side lamps (safely, of course, so as not to catch alight), to create added romance and depth of atmosphere.

SOFT SOUNDS
Set the mood with soft music in the background. Think those romantic tunes from your first date, first long drive or that Sunday afternoon at home for a more personal touch. Put together a playlist with soulful tracks or relaxing sounds to create the right ambience. A playlist of your love’s favourite tunes is sure to warm their heart. Don’t have the time? Try an album compilation or platforms like iTunes, where you find mixes for any occasion.

TANTALISE THE TASTE BUDS
Experiment with food, but keep it fun and simple using different flavours. Make things intimate by serving something that’s eaten with the fingers (like spinach and feta croquettes). Opt for easy-to-prepare starters and mains to spice up the night, and complete the experience with something as beautiful as it is sweet, like slices of luscious amasi cheesecake.

ELIMINATE DISTRACTIONS
You don’t want the kids or phones interrupting your magic moments. Switch off mobile devices and other electronics, and put the kids to bed before dinner or – even better – drop them off at a friend or family member for the night if you can.

TIP
Fruits like grapes or strawberries are great for picnics!
