WINNING LOOKS FROM THE 2020 OSCARS

Finally the Oscars have arrived! Let’s see who made an impression on the red carpet and who had the biggest fashion moment this year.

The Oscars are the pinnacle of the awards season and the most anticipated awards event in the film industry. The best of the best actors, producers and directors have been waiting and hoping that all their hard work will earn them at least one of the trophies, as well as recognition and acknowledgement from one of the biggest organisations in entertainment.

The 2020 Oscars were held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. As usual, it was a glamorous event with everyone showing up looking their magnificent best. This year’s red carpet was a bit muted, with simple tones of black and white and just a few pops of colour. Celebrities brought their A-game of course, and top Hollywood designers showcased their couture gowns and luxury jewellery.

Let’s see the winning looks from the 2020 Oscars.

CYNTHIA ERIVO

Cynthia has had a good run this season. Her looks have been amazing and she’s become one to watch on the red carpet. At the 2020 Oscars, she wore a white and silver graphic-cut Versace Atelier gown with a thigh-high slit and a dramatically voluminous train. She was also draped in diamonds from Piaget, making her the epitome of Hollywood royalty.

CHARLIZE THERON

Charlize is consistent in her red-carpet looks – she is always ultra-sophisticated and brings high fashion with class and grace. For this year’s Oscars she chose an asymmetrical black Dior gown with sculptural detailing. The gown created the perfect silhouette for her frame, with the slit and off-the-shoulder sleeve showing off her body beautifully and highlighting the diamond pendant necklace from Tiffany & Co.

ANELE MDODA

Our very own local celeb, Anele Mdoda, covered the event for M-Net and had the chance to rub shoulders with the rich and famous. Anele added a bit of Mzansi magic to the red carpet as she interviewed A-listers such as James Corden, Al Pacino, Janelle Monae, and Oscar winner Regina King. Her red carpet look was very much on par with the best dressed, she looked effortlessly beautiful in her Juan William Aria couture gown.

JANELLE MONAE

Never one to shy away from bringing drama and fashion to the red carpet, Janelle again raised the bar for her fellow celebrities and Hollywood’s fashion houses. Always inventive with her looks, she worked with designer Ralph Lauren who took a different approach to create a jaw-dropping red-carpet moment. Janelle sparkled in a hooded, rhinestone-encrusted and crystal layered silk-lame tulle dress. This dress is said to be fully hand embroidered, with more than 168 000 crystals.

TRACEE ELLIS ROSS

Some celebrities skipped the awards show red carpet and went for the Vanity Fair after-party red carpet instead. Tracee Ellis Ross' look outshone the competition as she strutted the red carpet in a gold Zuhair Murad couture number. The gown shimmers with sequinned detailing and features a plunging neckline and floor-length cape. Her accessories were minimal as the dress made a statement all on its own.

SOFÍA VERGARA

Sofía Vergara is known for her hourglass shape and form-fitting, mermaid-tail gowns on the red carpet. She knows what works for her and she nails it every time! This time she turned up the glam factor in an embellished Dolce and Gabbana gown, with matching chandelier earrings and a pop of red lip colour.

KIM KARDASHIAN AND KANYE WEST

One of the most fashionable and highly influential couples in Hollywood, Kim and Kanye brought some fun and extravagance at the Oscars after-party. Kim wore a 2003 Alexander McQueen dress called ‘The Oyster Dress’ by the late designer, which was Kanye’s Christmas present to her last year. Kanye, being a fashion designer himself, decided on a navy blazer and black leather plants, with suede boots. He accessorised with a huge diamond chain, which is thought to have been Kim’s Christmas present to him last year.
