WHAT YOUR FAVOURITE SEASON MIGHT SAY ABOUT YOU

What your favourite season might say about you

It’s not as simple as summer equals happy, winter equals sad. But the season you enjoy most might describe the kind of person you are. Read on and see which season is you!

Down here in Southern Africa, summer is everybody’s favourite season. Isn’t it? For us, it means a much-needed break, the festive season, holiday for the school kids and a chance to enjoy free entertainment such as days at the beach, hikes, visits to game reserves or just soaking up sun and playing outdoors.

That’s not the case worldwide. A study just released found that more than half of Americans can’t wait for autumn. Why? The big reason is the bright colours. Second is the milder weather and the chill in the air. A craving for hot chocolate and home-made soup as well as making holiday food for Thanksgiving were next on the list. What this shows, is that your choice of season also has to do with happy memories.

But people can love or hate certain seasons for surprising reasons. Hard to believe? Researchers have looked at how seasonal changes can influence how we feel and behave and made some interesting discoveries.

There is a kind of depression called seasonal affective disorder. It’s brought on by weather change. This hits mostly when winter sets in and is a problem especially in cold parts such as Scandinavia. Patients can rent or buy a phototherapy device ("light box") for some phototherapy. The box shines with a specific type of light and basking in it a few hours per day helps against SAD.

Believe it or not, there are also people who get depressed when summer arrives.

Cold weather might influence our moods and dropping temperatures might effect how we behave. Light can have a significant influence on our mood. We can feel happy and energetic on sunny days and gloomy on dark days.

Here are the seasons and the personalities most likely to prefer them.

SPRING
It gets warmer and greener. There’s growth, new life in nature and a feeling of expectation. The weather is a bit crazy, which is exciting to people who crave new experiences. Spring gives you that feeling of renewal after a long, cold winter. You don’t just spring-clean the house, but yourself as well!

A spring lover can be a true original, keen to try new things. You are warm and loving and want special attention from loved ones.

SUMMER
Summer usually means a steady supply of long, light, warm days. If this is the time you long for all year, you probably love getting out, travelling and being active. Music festivals, food festivals, garden parties, hiking trips – this is your thing.

Summer fans are more likely to be upbeat and assertive. They’re extroverts in every way – keen to meet new people and to leave their comfort zone. The life of the party? That’s the summer person.

AUTUMN
Watching the changes in nature gives autumn people fresh ideas and new insights, inspiring them to get creative. It’s a season when the time seems to slow down. The chill in the air and longer evenings are comforting if you like a little peace and quiet. You enjoy being social but mostly with family and close friends. A walk in the park or a coffee at a quiet cafe can be more enjoyable now since it isn’t so crowded and noisy.

WINTER
Tightly wrapped in warm clothes, cosy inside as the cold and storms descend outside… Winter usually is calmer and less stressful. Winter people can be homebodies who like some alone time to think, dream and wind down. You feel more secure when you can stay at home and isolate themselves, knowing you're not missing much.
