The Oscars are the most prestigious awards ceremony in the entertainment industry and one of the biggest nights for Hollywood. This year’s event was exceptionally glamourous despite the COVID-19 restrictions and some of the nominees attending virtually.

The 93rd Academy Awards took place on Sunday, 25 April at the Dolby Theatre and some parts at the Union Train Station in Los Angelos. The crème de la crème of Hollywood gathered in high-end couture designs to celebrate the most outstanding films of 2020 and to honour those who have made impressive contributions to the film industry. The event was maskless but with strict safety protocols, including vaccinations, testing, and social distancing.

Our biggest highlight of the evening? When the golden statue for Best Documentary went to ‘My Octopus Teacher’ directed by South Africans James Reed and Pippa Ehrlich. Truly a proudly South Africa moment!

As expected, the red carpet was filled with elegance, flamboyance, and an explosion of colour. Here are our favourite fashion moments from the 2021 Oscars!

1. REGINA KING

Regina King won an Oscar two years ago for Best Supporting Actress. This year she was nominated as a director for the movie ‘One Night in Miami’, which had three nominations. While she did not walk away with an award, she opened the ceremony and presented the first two categories. Looking like true royalty, King wore a custom, pale-blue Louis Vuitton gown with bedazzled pleating and bold shoulders. She topped off this look with simple jewellery and a sleek bob.

2. H.E.R

Gabriella Sarmiento Wilson, also known as H.E.R, has become a regular on the red carpet and someone to watch out for in the fashion news. She took home the Oscar for best original song ‘Fight For You’, from the movie Judas and the Black Messiah. Her look for the evening was a cobalt blue beaded and hooded jumpsuit. This look was inspired by her idol, Prince who passed away five years ago last week. He wore a similar sparkling hooded outfit to the Oscars in 1985, the year he won Best Original Song for ‘Purple Rain’.

3. HALLE BERRY

Halle is no stranger to drop-dead gorgeous looks and unforgettable gowns on the red carpet. She was the definition of glam in a mauve Dolce and Gabbana strapless gown. Berry showed off her new bob with bangs and looked stunning.

4. ZENDAYA

Zendaya has become a fashion icon, always making a bold fashion statement at special events, and the Oscars were no exception. She looked like a dream in a vibrant yellow cutout gown custom-made by Valentino. What stood out the most from her look are the 6 million dollar diamonds she wore from Bulgari. Zendaya is the first to debut a necklace from Bulgari’s upcoming jewellery collection, Magnifica set to be released soon. This piece featured two diamond collars with a removable centre brooch and tassel, complete with a yellow six-carat cushion-cut diamond.

5. TIARA THOMAS

Singer Tiara Thomas was nominated for Best Song for ‘I Can’t Breathe’ and ‘Fight For You’ from the movie Judas And The Black Messiah which she co-wrote with H.E.R. She made a dramatic statement in a chic Jovana Louis pantsuit with eye-catching sleeves, a deep plunging neckline, and a diamond lariat necklace. This monochromatic look is a simple yet unforgettable moment at this year’s Oscars. Tiara wore her hair in thick cornrows, and for her make-up, she opted for dark eyes and nude lips.

6. ANGELA BASSETT

Actress Angela Bassett is one A-lister that always delivers show-stopping ensembles at any red carpet event. At the 93rd Academy Awards, she made a grand entrance in a custom red Alberta Ferrett off-the-shoulder gown with draped shoulders, a high slit, and a long train. Bassett paired this with Christian Louboutin heels and accessorised it with a Chopard diamond bracelet. This look is similar to her 2019 Oscar’s look where she wore a hot pink voluminous creation by Reem Acra.

7. LESLIE ODOM

There’s no way anyone could miss Leslie Odom Jnr at the Oscars. The actor stepped onto the red carpet wearing a gold double-breasted, Brioni suit, Cartier jewels, and Omega watch. Men are often overlooked on the red carpet, with the traditional tuxedo being everyone’s number one pick, but Leslie took a different approach which worked out perfectly for him. He looked like an African king.

8. COLMAN DOMINGO

Actor Colman Domingo stars alongside Chadwick Boseman in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom – the five-time Oscar-nominated film. He wowed the crowds as he walked in wearing a dashing hot pink suit by Atelier Versace. The three-piece suit has landed him on the best-dressed list at this year’s Oscars and will become a fashion moment we’ll never forget.
