OLIVE OIL: THE LITTLE MIRACLE PRODUCT FOR SKIN & HEALTH

Forget about expensive beauty products that will leave a hole in your pocket and discover the treasure that is olive oil.

There are many different types of oils available on the market today, and to be honest, it can be confusing when one has to decide which to buy and use for the best possible results. Before oils became a thing, there was good old olive oil, and celebrities such as Emma Stone and Julia Roberts have proven why you too, should be giving it a go.

Before we look at what these celebs have to say, let’s have a look at some of the benefits that this precious oil is known to have and its uses:

HEALTH
When added to food, studies have shown that those who consume olive oil have a decreased risk of cardiovascular disease and even dementia compared to those who consume little or none. These benefits are attributed to the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties found in the oil.

SKIN
And the same antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties are what is good for skin too. These ingredients and properties mean that the oil will help the skin recover from environmental damage, premature ageing, and soothe sensitivity. "Olive oil contains antioxidants that fight free-radical damage, as well as an ingredient called squalene, which is extremely hydrating. It's been used on skin since ancient times—even Cleopatra was a fan," Aesthetic Plastic Surgeon, Dr Paul Laurenc says giving a quick history lesson for Byrdie.

BEAUTY
Olive oil can also be used as a make-up remover, to get rid of all the stubborn, aka waterproof, mascara and eyeliner. Most make-up removers can leave skin feeling a bit tacky and taught, but olive oil leaves skin nourished and hydrated and is gentle around the eye area.

WHAT DO THE CELEBRITIES HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THIS LIQUID GOLD THAT’S SITTING PRETTY IN YOUR KITCHEN CUPBOARD?
Emma Stone is one of the stars that swear by olive oil for her sensitive and allergy-prone skin, “I’m really allergic to a lot of stuff, so I can really only use products with a single ingredient. So I just put it on my face, and I smell like focaccia,” says the 33-year-old actress.

She’s not the only one who’s enjoying all the benefits of olive oil. Julia Roberts revealed to Vogue Italia that she uses a few drops of the oil emulsified in warm water and rubs it into the skin. She applies this treatment on her nails and hair, soaking in the "mask" for around half an hour. She rubs extra-virgin olive oil into her feet and leaves it on all night after slipping on a pair of old bed socks. No wonder she looks so good at 54!

HOW TO USE IT:
Olive oil can be used by almost anyone, except those with oily and acne prone skin.

If you’re hesitant about applying the oil directly to your skin, go ahead and add it to your shower gel, body lotion and even hair conditioner for deep nourishment.

If you’re applying directly on the skin, make sure your skin is moisturised with a water-based lotion or cream first then lock it in with a layer of olive oil. A little goes a long way!
